Chapter 11 - The First Night Leah Trusted Me Again

Sophie was fourteen months old when Leah asked me to stay overnight at her house for the first time.

The baby had a fever. Leah was exhausted and frightened because the previous night reminded her of the months when no one allowed her control over medical decisions.

I arrived with medicine, soup, and no assumption that I would remain.

We took turns holding Sophie. At three in the morning, her fever began to fall.

Leah sat beside me on the couch.

“I used to imagine you coming home while I was cleaning,” she said.

“I wish I had come earlier.”

“In some versions, you shouted at them. In others, you chose the company.”

I looked down at Sophie sleeping against my chest.

“You believed I might choose the company.”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

“I almost did for years without realizing it.”

She rested her head against the couch.

“You were very dramatic with the catering tray.”

I looked at her.

A faint smile appeared.

It was the first time she had joked about that night.

“I ruined excellent wine.”

“It belonged to Celia.”

“Then I regret nothing.”

She laughed quietly, then covered her mouth to avoid waking Sophie.

That moment did not repair the marriage.

It created room for another moment.

Trust returned through small, almost boring acts. I arrived when I said I would. I asked before making decisions. I respected no without treating it as rejection. I spoke about my mother without asking Leah to comfort me.

Six months later, we began dating each other again.
