Chapter 6 - The Secret in the Family Trust

The hospital confirmed that Elena's baby was alive.

The doctors monitored her for several hours.

There had been no immediate life-threatening injury.

But Elena was ordered to remain under observation.

Daniel was in custody.

Victoria was in custody.

The media had already discovered the story.

But Elena didn't care.

She only wanted one answer.

Why?

Arthur arrived at the hospital carrying several files.

He sat beside her bed.

“There is something you need to know.”

Elena stared.

“About the trust.”

He nodded.

“Your daughter is the protected beneficiary of the Bellamy Family Trust.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means the family fortune does not pass directly to Daniel.”

“Or Victoria?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

“Your child.”

Elena looked down at her stomach.

“How much?”

Arthur hesitated.

“Enough to change the family's power structure.”

“How much?”

“Several hundred million dollars.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“That is why they wanted her dead.”

“Yes.”

“But why kill her?”

“Because the trust has a provision.”

“What provision?”

“If the beneficiary is born without a surviving biological mother, guardianship temporarily transfers to the family trustee.”

“Victoria.”

“Yes.”

“So she would control everything.”

“Exactly.”

Elena stared.

“She wasn't trying to protect the family.”

“No.”

“She wanted the trust.”

Arthur nodded.

“But that's not the worst part.”

Elena looked at him.

“There's more?”

“Yes.”

Daniel had been preparing for months.

He had already forged documents suggesting Elena was unstable.

He had arranged witnesses.

He had created a file describing her as emotionally unfit.

“He was going to take your daughter legally.”

Elena felt sick.

“And if that failed?”

“He had a second plan.”

Arthur looked toward the door.

“The one you just survived.”

Elena whispered:

“They intended to kill my baby.”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Then a nurse entered.

She was carrying Elena's medical file.

“Mrs. Bellamy?”

“Yes?”

“There is something unusual.”

“What?”

“The baby's genetic screening shows a marker that appears in very few members of the Bellamy family.”

Elena frowned.

Arthur took the report.

“What marker?”

The nurse pointed.

“A rare inherited mutation.”

Arthur's face changed.

He knew what it meant.

“What?”

“That marker is present in the original Bellamy family lineage.”

Elena stared.

“So my daughter…”

“Is the direct descendant the trust was written for.”

That meant there was no question.

The baby was the reason the trust existed.

But then Arthur found something else.

A historical document from Elena's mother's family.

The Bellamy family had once promised protection to a woman named Clara Hayes.

She had been disinherited after marrying a poor man.

Her child had inherited nothing.

But the family learned from that mistake.

The trust was created to ensure that no future mother could be removed simply because someone wanted access to the fortune.

Elena read the document.

Her eyes filled.

Her daughter wasn't merely rich.

She was protected.

And Victoria had spent years trying to destroy the very protection created to prevent what she had done.
