Chapter 8 - The Coastal Haven

By the spring of the following year, Maya was fourteen months old, taking her first wobbly steps and babbling her first sweet words: "Mama," "Grandma," and "Doggy."
Using the recovered inheritance money and the proceeds from the sale of my marital home, I purchased a beautiful, two-story craftsman cottage in a quiet coastal town in Maine. The house sat on a gentle bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by tall pine trees, blooming blue hydrangeas, and the soothing sound of crashing waves.
The house had large, expansive glass windows that flooded every room with natural sunlight. There were no dark corners, no heavy brass locks, and no hidden folders.
I opened a boutique interior design studio in town, specializing in creating safe, serene, and beautiful living spaces for families. My work quickly gained local acclaim, and for the first time in years, I felt a deep sense of professional fulfillment and independence.
My mother moved into a charming guesthouse on the property, providing endless love, support, and babysitting while I built my business.
One crisp October afternoon, while Maya played in the soft sand near the tide pools on the beach below our house, I noticed a friendly golden retriever running toward us, chasing a red ball.
"Barnaby! Come back here!" a warm, masculine voice called out.
A tall man with kind blue eyes, dark blonde hair, and a warm smile jogged down the wooden stairs from the coastal path. He wore a navy wool sweater and held a dog leash in one hand.
"I am so sorry!" he said, stopping to catch his breath as the golden retriever gently dropped the ball at Maya’s feet. Maya let out a delighted squeal and clapped her tiny hands. "Barnaby gets a little overly excited when he sees new friends."
"It's completely fine," I smiled, bending down to help Maya pet the dog's soft ears. "She loves dogs."
"I'm Liam," the man said, extending his hand with genuine warmth. "I just bought the bookstore and cafe up on Main Street."
"I'm Nora," I said, shaking his hand. "And this is Maya."
"Nice to meet you, Nora and Maya," Liam said softly, his eyes reflecting the warm golden hour light of the setting sun. "Welcome to the coast."

Unlike Caleb, whose charm had always felt practiced and calculating, Liam possessed a gentle, grounded honesty. Over the next few months, our paths crossed regularly—at the local library, the farmer's market, and his bookstore, where he created a special toddler storytime corner just for Maya and the local children.
Slowly, carefully, I allowed myself to open up to the possibility of friendship, and eventually, something deeper.
