Chapter 10 - A Peaceful Tomorrow

Three years later, on a bright, crisp Christmas morning, the snow fell softly outside our coastal home.
Inside, the living room was filled with the warm scent of pine, cinnamon, and fresh coffee. A majestic pine tree stood by the stone fireplace, decorated with colorful ornaments, handmade paper snowflakes, and glowing gold lights. Gentle acoustic holiday music played softly in the background.
Four-year-old Maya, her dark hair tied in two cheerful pigtails, was sitting on the rug surrounded by colorful wrapping paper, excitedly showing her new wooden train set to her baby brother, Ethan—our eleven-month-old son, who sat happily on Liam’s lap, giggling and banging two toy blocks together.
My mother sat in a cozy armchair near the hearth, sipping tea and smiling peacefully as she watched the children play.
I stood by the large bay window, wrapped in a warm knitted sweater, holding a steaming mug of cocoa. I looked out at the ocean waves tumbling onto the shore under the clear winter sky.
In my home, there were no red folders. There were no forged documents, no bitter arguments, no cruel whispers, and no locks. There was only warmth, safety, truth, and unconditional love.
Earlier that month, Rachel had sent me a brief legal update, as required by court protocol.
Caleb’s latest appeal for early parole had been flatly denied by the state board, citing his total lack of rehabilitation and the severity of his crimes. Eleanor remained in custody, isolated and forgotten by the society she had spent her life trying so desperately to impress. Paige had finished her probation, living a quiet, obscure life under strict legal oversight.
Their shadows were gone. They were nothing more than distant, powerless footnotes in a story that had long since moved on to brighter, more beautiful chapters.
Liam walked up behind me, wrapping his warm arms gently around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.
"What are you thinking about, sweetheart?" he asked softly, kissing my cheek.
I leaned back against his chest, listening to the joyful laughter of Maya and Ethan echoing through our bright, sunlit home.
"I was just thinking about how far we've come," I said, turning in his arms to look into his kind blue eyes. "And how beautiful today is."
"It's going to be a good day," Liam smiled, kissing my forehead. "Every day is going to be a good day."

I smiled, taking his hand as we walked back to the fireplace to join our family around the Christmas tree.
The door was open, the sunlight was bright, and my life was finally, truly my own.
