Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Trap

By noon, I was back at Hart Global.

Not because the acquisition mattered more than Maya.

Because I finally understood that the boardroom was part of the same attack.

Twelve directors sat around the glass table.

The sellers from Riverton had returned after Julian persuaded them that my “family emergency” was resolved.

Julian was already seated when I walked in.

He looked concerned.

He stood.

“Nathan, how is Maya?”

The performance was flawless.

I almost admired it.

“She’s safe.”

“Thank God.”

He put a hand on my shoulder.

I looked at it.

Then at him.

He removed it.

Isabella had not contacted me since the hospital.

Her attorney did all the talking.

She denied abuse.

Denied financial fraud.

Denied the affair.

Denied everything.

Julian apparently believed I had not yet seen the kitchen footage.

Good.

I needed him to believe that.

The final acquisition documents were stacked in front of my chair.

He pushed a pen toward me.

“Once you sign, we can close by four.”

I sat.

“Before I do, I have a question.”

“Of course.”

“Why does Bellweather receive enhanced voting rights if Hart Global misses a revenue covenant by more than eight percent?”

Julian’s face barely changed.

“Standard lender protection.”

“No.”

I flipped to the appendix.

“This gives Bellweather the right to appoint three directors.”

“Temporarily.”

“And force asset sales.”

“Under extreme circumstances.”

“And replace the CEO.”

The room changed.

Several board members began reading.

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“You approved the term sheet.”

“I approved a term sheet that did not contain this language.”

Our general counsel looked up sharply.

Julian leaned forward.

“Nathan, this is not the time.”

“That is exactly what you told me yesterday.”

Silence.

“You told me the sellers would leave if I went home.”

“They nearly did.”

“You knew why I needed to go home?”

“No.”

“Interesting.”

I pressed a button on the conference-room control panel.

The glass screens behind me activated.

Kitchen footage appeared.

Isabella walked through the service door.

Julian followed.

Every person at the table stopped breathing.

Julian went white.

On-screen, he kissed my wife.

Then placed the briefcase containing Maya’s trust documents on the table.

One director whispered.

“Jesus.”

Julian stood.

“This is illegally obtained.”

“It is my house.”

“You recorded me without consent.”

“You were trespassing on my property while conspiring with my wife.”

He pushed his chair back.

“You have no idea what you’re looking at.”

“Then explain this.”

I played the second clip.

Isabella’s voice filled the boardroom.

“Once Nathan signs tomorrow, we won’t need him anymore.”

Julian looked toward the door.

Marcus stepped inside.

Two federal financial-crimes investigators followed him.

That was when Julian stopped pretending.

He looked at me.

“You should have signed.”

I stood.

“You should have stayed away from my daughter.”

His face twisted.

“This was never about your daughter.”

“Then what was it about?”

He smiled.

“Ask Isabella why she married you.”

The investigators moved toward him.

Before they reached him, Julian added one sentence.

May you like

“And ask her who Noah’s father really is.”
