Chapter 19 - Why Isabella Chose Me

Victoria finally stopped lying.

Six years earlier, Isabella was not a philanthropist.

She was a junior fundraiser at the Lang Foundation.

Victoria liked her.

Emily did not.

“She thought Isabella was too interested in wealthy donors,” Victoria admitted.

Emily was right.

Julian met Isabella through foundation events.

Their affair began months later.

Then Emily discovered Julian’s theft.

According to Victoria, Isabella saw opportunity immediately.

If Emily exposed Julian, everything ended.

If Emily disappeared, Maya inherited the trust.

And Nathan Hart became a wealthy widower with a young daughter.

I stared at Victoria.

“She targeted me before Emily died.”

Victoria cried.

“I didn’t know.”

“You introduced her to Julian.”

“Yes.”

“You praised her to Emily.”

“Yes.”

“And after Emily died?”

“I never spoke to Isabella again.”

“Why?”

“Emily told me she didn’t trust her.”

Too late.

Always too late.

Records confirmed Isabella attended my first charity event fourteen months after Emily’s death.

She did not approach me.

Not that night.

She simply made sure I saw her.

Three months later, we “accidentally” met again.

By then, she knew everything.

What Emily loved.

What I missed.

What Maya needed.

She modeled herself into the woman she thought I would choose.

And I chose her.

The realization was humiliating.

Then Maya asked the question that mattered.

“Did she ever love us?”

I did not want to answer.

Rebecca did.

“Some people can care about what you give them more than they care about you.”

Maya nodded.

“That sounds like no.”

Sometimes children cut through language better than adults.

The prosecutors offered Isabella a deal.

Testify against Julian regarding Emily’s death.

Plead guilty to financial fraud, forgery, child endangerment, and related charges.

In exchange, prosecutors would remove the possibility of several additional charges and recommend a lower sentence.

She accepted.

Julian did not.

He went to trial.

The courtroom heard everything.

Emily’s recording.

The truck payment.

The shell corporations.

The medical manipulation.

The planned institutionalization of Maya and me.

The half-billion-dollar acquisition trap.

Then Isabella testified.

For three days.

Julian stared at her as if he could kill her with his eyes.

On the final afternoon, the prosecutor asked one question.

“Did Mr. Voss ever explain why Maya Hart had to be removed before the acquisition closed?”

Isabella nodded.

“What did he say?”

Her voice was quiet.

“He said Maya was the one person Nathan would burn everything down to protect.”

I looked at my daughter sitting beside Rebecca behind me.

Julian had been right.

He simply underestimated how much I was willing to burn.

The jury convicted him.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Financial crimes.

And ultimately, charges connected to Emily’s death.

Franklin pleaded guilty before his own trial.

Laura entered a cooperation agreement.

Victoria was not charged with Emily’s death, but regulators pursued her for financial negligence and false filings.

Our relationship did not recover.

Maybe someday it would become something different.

Maybe not.

Then came the final custody hearing for Noah.

Julian’s parental rights were challenged because of his conviction.

Isabella voluntarily surrendered hers as part of a negotiated guardianship arrangement.

The judge looked at me.

“Mr. Hart, are you still asking to raise this child?”

I looked at Noah.

Then at Maya.

“Yes.”

“Knowing he is not biologically yours?”

“Yes.”

“Knowing his biological father harmed your family?”

“Yes.”

The judge studied me.

“Why?”

Maya whispered beside Rebecca.

“Because he’s Noah.”

The judge heard her.

So did I.

And that became the simplest answer.

May you like

“Because he’s Noah.”
