Chapter 7 - The Custody Battle

Three weeks later, the emergency custody hearing took place at the County Family Courthouse.
Vanessa sat at the defense table beside her court-appointed attorney, wearing a dark gray suit, her hair pulled back into a tight, neat bun to look like a humble, devout mother. My mother sat directly behind her in the gallery, clutching a rosary in her hands.
Mark sat at the prosecution table alongside his family law attorney, Sarah Vance. David and I sat behind them as subpoenaed character witnesses.
The judge, a formidable woman named Judge Kathleen Brooks, reviewed the thick stack of evidence folders on her bench.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Brooks spoke, looking down at Mark. "You are requesting full legal and physical custody of six-year-old Sophie, with supervised visitation for the mother contingent upon a complete psychological evaluation?"
"Yes, Your Honor," Mark testified clearly. "My wife’s behavior has escalated from unhealthy emotional competition to direct physical violence against our niece. She has demonstrated an inability to regulate her emotions when her rigid expectations regarding our daughter are challenged."
Vanessa’s attorney stood up. "Your Honor, this was an isolated domestic incident—a spilled dish during a tense family dinner. My client has been a loving, devoted stay-at-home mother for six years."
"An isolated incident?" Judge Brooks asked, pulling a document from the folder. "I have here a certified police report documenting a felony child endangerment charge. I also have six written affidavits from family members detailing a ten-year pattern of emotional manipulation."
Judge Brooks then turned her gaze to my mother in the gallery.
"Furthermore," Judge Brooks continued sternly, "the court has reviewed social media footage provided by the defense wherein the child's grandmother, Evelyn, actively encourages and defends the mother's violent outburst."
Judge Brooks slammed her gavel down. BANG.
"Emergency full custody of Sophie is awarded to the father, Mark Vance, effective immediately," Judge Brooks ruled. "The mother, Vanessa Vance, will have no contact with the minor child until she completes a twelve-week anger management program and a full forensic psychological evaluation."
Vanessa let out a strangled shriek from the defense table, collapsing against her lawyer as my mother began weeping loudly from the gallery.

Mark stood up, took a deep breath, and turned to shake David's and my hands.
"Thank you," Mark whispered. "Thank you for standing up when nobody else would."
