Chapter 4 - Mark’s Choice

By Tuesday afternoon, the story had completely unraveled for Vanessa.

Mark, her husband, had gone to the police station himself. He provided a full witness statement that completely corroborated my version of events, explicitly stating that Vanessa had deliberately lifted the skillet and thrown it toward Mia out of uncontrolled rage over the matching dresses.

At 4:00 PM, a knock came at my front door.

I looked through the peephole and saw Mark standing on the porch holding a large gift bag and a folder of documents. He looked exhausted, deep dark circles bruised beneath his eyes.

I opened the door. "Mark."

"Hey, Rachel," Mark said softly, his voice full of genuine shame. "Can I... can I talk to you and David for a few minutes?"

I stepped aside, letting him into the living room. David stepped out from his office, stepping beside me with a watchful, protective posture.

Mark set the gift bag on the coffee table. Inside was a soft plush bunny and a set of watercolor paints for Mia.

"First of all," Mark said, his eyes tearing up as he looked at David and me. "I am so, so sorry. I should have stopped Vanessa years ago. I saw how she treated you, I saw how your mother favored her... but I stayed quiet because I thought it was just petty sibling drama. I never imagined she would hurt a child."

"Where is Sophie?" I asked gently.

"She’s with my parents in Connecticut," Mark replied, wiping his eyes. "I filed for emergency full custody this morning, Rachel. And I served Vanessa with divorce papers while she was being processed at the county jail."

David and I exchanged a surprised look.

"You're divorcing her?" David asked.

"She’s sick, David," Mark said, pulling a stack of papers from his folder. "When we got home Sunday night before the police picked her up, she wasn't sorry. She was screaming that Mia deserved it for 'stealing Sophie's identity.' She’s spent six years treating our daughter like a trophy to flex on your family. I won't let my daughter grow up believing that kind of toxic, abusive behavior is normal."

Mark looked at me with deep sincerity. "I came to tell you that I’m testifying for the prosecution in your criminal case against her. You don't have to worry about me protecting her."
