Chapter 7 - The Audit and the New Foundation

Two months after Arthur Vance’s arrest, the corporate offices of Whitaker Foodservice Supply felt entirely different. The oppressive cloud of fear, suspicion, and hidden corruption had been thoroughly purged.
Sitting behind my grandfather’s large mahogany desk on the top floor of the downtown tower, I reviewed the final forensic audit report prepared by an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm.
The numbers were staggering: over fifteen million dollars in total financial recovery identified across domestic and international accounts. The federal asset forfeiture department had already begun returning frozen capital back to the company’s primary operational fund.
The intercom on my desk buzzed softly.
“Colonel Carter?” my new executive assistant, Sarah, asked over the speaker. “Your mother is downstairs in the lobby. She’s here for the 2:00 PM board of directors restructuring vote.”
“Send her up, Sarah,” I replied.
A few moments later, the office door clicked open. My mother walked in, carrying a leather portfolio and wearing a sharp, professional navy blue blazer. She looked ten years younger, the heavy burden of denial and familial guilt finally lifted from her shoulders.
“Good afternoon, Madam Chairwoman,” my mother greeted with a warm, proud smile.
“Good afternoon, Mother. Have a seat,” I gestured to the leather chairs opposite my desk.
She sat down, placing her portfolio on the glass coffee table. “I reviewed the final restructuring proposal you sent over last night. It’s brilliant, Allison. By decentralizing voting shares into an independent family trust and tying executive compensation strictly to ethical compliance, we’ve made it impossible for anyone to ever repeat what Arthur and Colin did.”
“That was the goal,” I nodded. “Grandma and Grandpa built this company on hard work, honesty, and community service. It’s time we return to those core values.”
“I agree completely,” my mother said softly, reaching across the table to take my hand. Her fingers were warm and steady. “I want to thank you, Allison. For your strength, your vigilance, and your patience with me while I learned how to see the truth. If you hadn’t stayed vigilant when everyone else told you to look away, we would have lost everything—most importantly, Lucy.”

“We’re a team, Mother,” I squeezed her hand back. “On the battlefield and at home. We protect what matters.”
Later that afternoon, the board of directors unanimously approved the complete restructuring plan. Whitaker Foodservice Supply was officially saved, restructured, and positioned for a bright, honorable future.
