Chapter 5 - Unmasking the Mastermind

The morning light broke grey and heavy over Richmond, casting a damp mist across the manicured lawns of the suburbs. I didn't sleep a wink. By 6:00 AM, I had compiled a complete, ironclad digital dossier linking Arthur Vance directly to the multi-million-dollar fraud, the offshore accounts, and the threatening phone call made from a burner device traced to an industrial park two miles from Vance’s private residence.

I printed three physical copies of the dossier, secured them in heavy manila folders, and placed one in my tactical briefcase.

“You’re going straight to corporate headquarters?” Michael asked, standing in the kitchen as I pulled my dark wool overcoat on. He had stayed up with me all night, drinking black coffee and reviewing security protocols.

“Vance thinks he’s safe because he hid behind Colin and Vanessa,” I said, slipping my service-grade tactical baton into its designated belt holster. “He thinks arresting them closed the loop. He doesn't know I spent the night tearing his digital footprint to pieces.”

“Take backup,” Michael urged, grabbing my hand. “Call Detective Thomas and have him meet you there.”

“Already done. Thomas and two squad cars are already stationed two blocks away from the Whitaker corporate offices. We’re taking him down publicly, before the board of directors meeting at 9:00 AM.”

By 8:45 AM, I walked through the double glass doors of Whitaker Foodservice Supply’s main administrative tower in downtown Richmond. The lobby was polished marble and brass, the same building my grandfather had built brick by brick. Employees in crisp business attire murmured quietly at their desks, still reeling from the news of Vanessa and Colin’s arrest the previous afternoon.

I took the private elevator straight to the executive penthouse floor.

The mahogany double doors to the boardroom were wide open. Around the long conference table sat the remaining members of the board of directors, looking anxious and pale. At the head of the table sat Arthur Vance—a tall, silver-haired man in a tailored charcoal suit, looking every bit the picture of corporate dignity.

“Colonel Carter,” Arthur greeted, standing up with a practiced, sympathetic smile. “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by the terrible news regarding Vanessa and Colin. Such a tragedy for the family. But we must press forward with today’s emergency board meeting.”

I walked slowly down the center of the boardroom, my boots clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. I didn't smile. I didn't shake his outstretched hand.

I stopped three feet from his chair, placed my briefcase on the mahogany table, and popped the brass latches.

“There will be no normal board meeting today, Arthur,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent room.

Arthur’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he recovered his composure. “Colonel, I understand you’re under immense stress given what happened to little Lucy—who I hear is thankfully recovering—but this is a formal corporate proceeding—”

“This is a criminal intervention,” I interrupted, pulling out the thick manila dossier and slamming it onto the table in front of him.

I opened the folder to page one, revealing the charted wire transfers from Whitaker Foodservice accounts to Vance’s private offshore shell company, Apex Logistics Solutions.

“For the past three years, Arthur, you’ve used your position as CFO to siphon over twelve million dollars from this company,” I stated loudly, locking my eyes onto his widening pupils. “You used Colin and Vanessa as useful idiots, letting them take the operational risks while you orchestrated the primary embezzlement scheme. And when I got too close to the audit, you had Vanessa try to distract my household—and when that failed, you personally placed a threatening phone call to my private number last night.”

The board members gasped, whispering frantically among themselves.

Arthur’s face drained of all color. The silver-haired facade of corporate respectability cracked completely, revealing a cornered, desperate animal.

“You have no proof of this!” Arthur snarled, his voice rising in panic as he slapped the dossier away. “These are forged military conspiracy theories! You’re unstable! The board will never believe—”

The heavy boardroom doors pushed open with a sharp bang.

Detective Thomas walked in, flanked by two uniformed police officers. He held up an arrest warrant signed by a federal judge less than twenty minutes prior.

“Arthur Vance,” Detective Thomas announced, holding out steel handcuffs. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, grand larceny, money laundering, and terroristic threats. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the officers stepped forward and snapped the cuffs around Arthur’s wrists, he glared at me with pure venom. “You think you’ve won, you arrogant soldier? The moment I talk, I’m taking your family name down with me!”

“My family name was built by my grandfather,” I replied coldly as they dragged him toward the elevators. “You were just a parasite feeding on its foundation. And parasites get purged.”
