Chapter 7 - The Uninvited Visitor

It happened on a crisp Tuesday afternoon in late autumn.

I was in my home office reviewing quarterly tax reports when the sharp, aggressive rat-a-tat-tat of front door knocking broke the afternoon quiet.

I walked to the foyer, peering through the peephole. Sarah stood on the porch, looking haggard, her designer handbag clutched tightly in her fist, her face twisted in a desperate mix of rage and supplication. Behind her stood Tyler, staring blankly at his tablet screen.

I opened the door just a few inches, keeping the security chain securely latched.

“What do you want, Sarah?” I asked, my voice completely devoid of emotion.

Sarah’s eyes widened in outrage at the barrier between us. “Open this door right now, Emily! Have you lost your mind completely? Lock me out like a common criminal on my own son’s porch!”

“This is my porch, Sarah. And you are trespassing.”

“I need my medical files!” Sarah shrieked, her voice cracking. “The public hospital requires my complete medication history and prior specialist notes before they’ll even schedule my pre-op consultation next week, and Michael is too cowardly to bring them to me!”

“Then your son can ask for them through proper channels,” I replied calmly. “He has access to his own filing cabinet in the study. You will not step foot across my threshold.”

At that moment, a taxi idling at the curb beeped its horn. Sarah glanced back frantically, then lunged forward, trying to jam her foot into the gap of the door to prevent me from closing it.

“You ungrateful, malicious little witch!” Sarah screamed, losing her temper entirely. “You think you’ve won, don't you? You think you can steal my son, ruin my health, and treat me like trash? I raised him! Without me, you’d be nothing!”

Before I could answer, a familiar car turned sharply into our driveway. Michael’s sedan pulled up behind the taxi. He stepped out, slamming the door, his face pale with shock and sudden, burning fury as he saw his mother physically assaulting our front doorway.
