Chapter 10 - The Harvest of Peace

On a warm Saturday morning, Olivia—now two-and-a-half years old, bright-eyed, and full of joyful energy—raced across the living room rug with her favorite stuffed bear clutched tightly in one arm.
She ran straight toward Michael, who scooped her up into the air with a booming laugh, spinning her around until she squealed with delight.
I stood by the kitchen island, watching them through the sunlight streaming through the windows, stirring a pot of fresh fruit compote on the stove. The scent of sweet berries and warm vanilla filled the room—completely replacing the smell of burning onions and dish soap from that fateful Sunday months ago.
Michael walked over, setting Olivia down gently on the rug with a colorful picture book, and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind. He rested his chin on my shoulder, pressing a soft kiss to my temple.
“What are you smiling about, gorgeous?” he whispered, his voice warm and steady.
I leaned back into his embrace, looking out at our daughter, who was happily pointing at a picture of a puppy in her book, safe, cherished, and surrounded by unconditional love.

Michael smiled back, tightening his arms around me. “And nobody ever will again.”
