Chapter 3: The Breaking News

Morning arrived with a cold, grey fog rolling across the highway. Clara sat on the edge of the motel bed, watching the television muted on the wall console. Lily was at the small table, quietly drawing pictures on a pad of paper with cheap crayons Clara had bought from the front desk. She still wore her light blue dress, though Clara had brushed out her brown hair and tied it back neatly.

At seven o'clock, the local news banner flashed bright red across the screen: STERLING ESTATE RAIDED BY FEDERAL AGENTS. Clara picked up the remote and unmuted the sound.

A reporter stood in front of the sweeping wrought-iron gates of the Sterling mansion—the very gates Clara had sped through just eighteen hours earlier. Federal sedans and unmarked vans lined the curving driveway. The news anchor detailed how federal prosecutors, acting on evidence of widespread corporate wire fraud, had seized the property and arrested senior matriarch Evelyn Sterling and corporate counsel Julian Sterling.

The camera cut to footage of Evelyn being led down the stone steps in handcuffs. Even dressed in her grey jacket and pearl necklace, surrounded by armed officers, her expression remained stoic and unyielding. She did not duck her head or hide her face from the flashing press cameras. Behind her, Julian walked calmly in his navy suit, his posture straight, his dark hair neat, offering no comment as reporters shouted questions about millions in missing funds.

“It’s Grandma,” Lily said softly, dropping her blue crayon onto the table. She looked up at Clara with wide, curious eyes. “Is she in trouble?”

Clara walked over and knelt beside her daughter, placing her hands gently on Lily’s shoulders. “Grandma is being very brave right now, Lily. She’s fighting for us.”

“Why was she mad at me yesterday?” Lily asked, her voice small. “She said I needed manners.”

Clara felt a lump form in her throat. She pulled Lily into a close embrace, resting her chin on the girl’s shoulder. “She wasn’t really mad at you, sweetie. She had to pretend to be angry so bad people wouldn’t know how much she loves you. Do you understand?”

Lily nodded slowly, though her young mind could only grasp a fraction of the truth. “Like playing a game?”

“A very serious game,” Clara whispered.

She turned her gaze back to the television screen. The reporter mentioned that investigators were currently searching for David Sterling’s widow, Clara Sterling, who was believed to have fled the mansion shortly before the raid. The report noted that authorities suspected Clara had taken vital documentation related to the family’s hidden assets.

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. Marcus Vance was undoubtedly watching the same news broadcast, waiting to see where she would surface. He had orchestrated the downfall of the Sterling family, framing David and driving him to his grave, and now he was using the federal government as his hammer to crush what remained. Clara knew she couldn't stay in this motel room much longer. She had to retrieve the ledger from the bank box in Bridgeport before Marcus’s men traced her location.
