Chapter 11: Shadow of the Past

Within thirty minutes, the heavy oak doors of the fifth-floor conference room opened, and two armed federal marshals escorted Julian Sterling inside. Though his hands were unrestrained for the meeting, he still wore his sharp navy suit, his dark hair neatly styled despite hours spent in a federal holding cell. His eyes swept across the room, softening instantly as they landed on Clara and Lily.

“Julian,” Clara said, stepping forward.

Julian extended a hand, resting it gently on her shoulder in a rare moment of overt warmth. “You made it, Clara. You brought the drive.”

“I met with Attorney Hayes,” Clara replied, glancing back at the prosecutor who was reviewing the digital files on a secure government computer. “He’s examining the bank ledgers now.”

A senior forensic analyst sat beside Hayes, trying to bypass the secondary encryption layer on David’s hard drive. “The drive is locked with an eighteen-character alphanumeric cipher,” the technician reported, looking up at Hayes. “If we attempt a force-entry bypass, the internal kill-switch will wipe the drive permanently.”

Julian stepped toward the computer station, his expression grave. “David set that password himself three days before his crash. He told me he secured it with a phrase that only three people in this world would ever understand.”

Clara stepped closer to the screen, her heart hammering in her chest. Memories of her late husband flooded her mind—his last quiet moments at home, his tearful glances at Lily, his desperate attempt to create a secure future before his world shattered. She thought back to the handwritten letter from Evelyn, the trust papers, and the deep, silent bonds that tied their broken family together.

“It isn't a business code,” Clara said softly, her voice filled with sudden realization. She looked over at Lily, who was quietly swinging her legs on the plush leather chair. “David loved her more than his own life. The day she was born, he bought a star registration certificate under her name.”

Clara leaned over the keyboard. With precise, trembling fingers, she typed out Lily’s full birth name followed by the coordinates of that distant constellation—the exact sequence David had engraved on a silver locket he had gifted to Clara seven years ago.

She pressed the enter key.

A soft electronic chime echoed through the quiet conference room. The red warning icons vanished from the monitor, replaced by a green progress bar that rapidly loaded hundreds of archived audio files, signed extortion threats, and internal bank communications.

Hayes leaned closer to the monitor, clicking on an audio file dated six months prior. David’s recorded voice filled the room, trembling with fear yet distinct: “Marcus, I won't sign the fraudulent land transfers. If you keep using my company to launder those funds, I’m going to the federal authorities.”

Marcus Vance’s unmistakable, cold voice responded immediately on the recording: “You sign those documents, David, or your mother, your wife, and your daughter will lose everything they own. I will ensure they spend the rest of their lives in prison while you watch from a cell.”

The forensic technician gasped softly. Attorney Hayes stood up straight, his face hardened with icy determination. The truth was fully revealed.
