Chapter 8 - The Trial of the Century

The trial of Linda and Thomas Harper became the headline story across every major news network in the country. Dubbed "The Carter Inheritance Fraud" by the media, the courtroom proceedings captivated the public, drawing crowds of reporters and onlookers outside the federal courthouse every morning.

I didn't attend every day of the trial; Arthur and my legal team advised that my presence wasn't necessary, as the mountain of forensic financial evidence was already airtight. However, I did choose to attend the final day of sentencing, walking into the grand courtroom hand-in-hand with Noah, accompanied by private security.

When we walked through the double doors, a hush fell over the gallery. Heads turned, and cameras clicked softly from the press section.

Linda Harper sat at the defendant's table, looking older, smaller, and utterly defeated. Her prison-issue gray jumpsuit hung loosely on her frame. When she looked up and saw me walking down the center aisle with Noah—who was dressed in a sharp, tailored blazer, standing tall and confident—her eyes widened in a mixture of shame and despair. She quickly averted her gaze, staring down at her clasped hands on the wooden table.

Judge Harrison, a stern-faced magistrate with decades of federal experience, adjusted his glasses and looked down from the elevated bench.

“The court has reviewed all arguments, testimonies, and forensic accounting reports,” Judge Harrison announced, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “The conspiracy to defraud the Carter estate, forge legal documents, embezzle trust funds, and systematically abuse and suppress the legal heirs is one of the most egregious cases of corporate and domestic corruption this bench has ever witnessed.”

He paused, letting the weight of his words settle over the room.

“Linda Harper, for your primary role as the mastermind of this conspiracy, you are sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Thomas Harper, for your active participation and concealment of stolen funds, you are sentenced to fifteen years. Furthermore, all remaining assets, properties, and holdings registered under your names are permanently forfeited to the Carter Trust and restitution funds.”

The gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack.

Linda buried her face in her hands, letting out a ragged, muffled sob that was drowned out by the low murmur of the press gallery. Thomas stared blankly ahead, his spirit completely broken.

As the bailiffs approached the defendants to lead them away, I didn't feel anger, nor did I feel joy. I felt a quiet, profound sense of closure. The chapter of exploitation, fear, and survival was officially closed.

As we walked out of the courthouse into the bright afternoon sunlight, a gentle breeze rustled the trees lining the plaza. Noah looked up at me, gripping my hand tightly.

“Can we go feed the ducks in the park now, Mom?” he asked, a bright, carefree smile on his face.

I smiled back, squeezing his hand. “Let’s go, buddy.”
