Chapter 5 - Ascending to the Throne

The transition of power at Carter Global was swift, surgical, and absolute. Within forty-eight hours of the incident at the Grand Mayfield Hotel, Arthur Pendelton’s legal team dismantled every financial vehicle Linda Harper had used to siphon funds from the estate.

We had moved into the penthouse suite at the Carter Tower—a sprawling, glass-walled sanctuary on the fiftieth floor that offered a panoramic view of the entire city skyline. For the first few days, the sheer scale of it all felt surreal. There were automated lighting systems, a private indoor pool, and a kitchen stocked with gourmet foods prepared by chefs who treated Noah like royalty.

Yet, despite the luxury, Noah remained the same sweet, grounded little boy. He spent his mornings sitting by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the helicopters rise and fall, clutching a small stuffed bear I had bought him from a thrift store years ago.

On the third morning, a formal board meeting of Carter Global was convened in the executive boardroom on the forty-eighth floor.

I sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Arthur Pendelton sat to my right, acting as corporate secretary, while Julian Vance—who held a significant minority stake in the company—sat opposite us, observing with an approving nod. Lining the sides of the table were twelve senior executives, men and women in tailored suits who had once taken orders from Linda Harper’s proxy board members.

Every single one of them was looking at me—and more importantly, at the empty chair beside me where Noah sat, wearing a brand-new navy blazer that Arthur had specially ordered for him.

“Good morning, everyone,” I said, my voice steady, carrying the quiet authority that six years of hardship and resilience had forged within me.

“Good morning, Mrs. Carter,” the board members chorused in unison.

“Let’s dispense with the pleasantries,” I continued, opening the folder before me. “Mr. Pendelton has briefed me on the current restructuring of the board. Effective immediately, all proxies associated with Linda Harper, Thomas Harper, and their associates are permanently revoked. Furthermore, we are initiating a forensic audit of every subsidiary, vendor, and contractor associated with the Harper family over the past decade.”

A murmur of agreement rippled through the table. One of the senior vice presidents, a man named Henderson who had long suspected Linda’s corruption but lacked the leverage to fight her, raised his hand.

“Mrs. Carter, what about the Grand Mayfield Hotel and the ongoing legal fallout from the wedding incident?” Henderson asked.

“The hotel will undergo a complete management overhaul,” I replied smoothly. “Revoke all hospitality contracts with the Harper associates. Furthermore, I want a dedicated community outreach fund established, managed by the Carter Foundation, to support single mothers and underprivileged families in our city—starting with full housing and educational grants for every employee who was mistreated or underpaid by the previous administration.”

Julian Vance smiled openly, leaning back in his chair. “Brilliant, Emily. Henry Carter would be proud.”

Noah tugged gently on my sleeve. I leaned down. “Mom, can we go get ice cream after this?”

A soft smile touched my lips. “As much as you want, buddy.”

While we were reshaping the corporate empire upstairs, down in the holding cells of the municipal precinct, the reality of their downfall was crashing down on the Harper family. Linda Harper’s high-priced defense attorneys had already dropped her case once they realized the retainer checks had bounced due to frozen assets. Thomas and Jessica were facing multiple felony charges for fraud, extortion, and conspiracy—charges that carried potential decades-long prison sentences.

The table that had once looked down on us, mocked us, and treated my six-year-old son like a servant was now gone, swept away by the unyielding tide of justice.
