Chapter 8 - THE LAST PIECE OF THE PLAN

Charles was already waiting.

When we arrived at the apartment, the door was open.

Nobody answered.

Inside, everything was untouched.

Books.

Photographs.

Old newspapers.

A small television.

Then I saw the desk.

It contained a single folder.

My name was written across it.

I opened it.

Inside were reports from eighteen years ago.

Arthur Sloan had hired a private investigator to track Charles.

Not to kill him.

To locate him.

The investigator had found him in Canada.

Then the reports stopped.

A note explained why.

Charles had threatened to reveal Bluebird publicly.

Arthur chose not to act.

Instead, he waited.

He needed the next generation.

Me.

And then Ellie.

I felt sick.

This had been planned for years.

Grant wasn't a coincidence.

My marriage had been targeted.

The affair had been useful.

The custody strategy had been prepared.

The trust had been studied.

And Bluebird had been waiting for Ellie.

Then I found another document.

A proposed legal amendment.

It would have transferred Bluebird authority from the beneficiary to an “approved family trustee.”

Arthur.

I realized the final objective.

They didn't need to own the trust.

They only needed to control the trustee.

That was the entire reason Grant had tried to remove me.

And when I activated the trust's emergency protections, I had accidentally destroyed their fastest route.

That was why the messages started.

Why they were desperate.

Why they kept escalating.

But there was one final person still involved.

Grant.

He was in prison.

He had nothing left to lose.

I visited him again.

He looked at me.

“You figured it out.”

“Yes.”

“Arthur wanted the trust.”

“Yes.”

“Conrad helped him.”

“Yes.”

“Celeste didn't know everything.”

“She told me.”

Grant nodded.

Then he looked away.

“Mara.”

“What?”

“I was going to run.”

“When?”

“After the custody hearing.”

He swallowed.

“I was going to take Ellie and disappear.”

I stared at him.

“You were going to kidnap your own daughter.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought if Arthur controlled Bluebird, he'd destroy everyone.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You helped him.”

“I know.”

“Then why tell me now?”

“Because I finally understood something.”

“What?”

“You were never the enemy.”

I said nothing.

He continued.

“Arthur convinced me that if I controlled the trust, I'd become powerful.”

“He told me I could leave Mercer International.”

“Start again.”

“But he lied.”

I looked at him.

“He promised Celeste a life.”

“He promised me a fortune.”

“He promised everyone something.”

“And he kept everything for himself.”

I stood.

“Where is he?”

Grant looked at me.

“Your father's study.”

“What?”

“He thinks that's where the last Bluebird documents are.”

My blood froze.

The last original documents.

The ones my father had hidden.

The ones I had already found.

Arthur was coming.

I returned home.

Security was doubled.

The study was sealed.

At 11:46 p.m., the alarm sounded.

Someone had entered through the east wing.

Security moved.

I went to the study.

Arthur stood in front of the fireplace.

He looked calm.

He held a folder.

“Mara.”

“You're finished.”

He smiled.

“No.”

He pressed a button.

The study doors locked.

“The problem with power, Mara, is that people mistake visibility for control.”

I looked at him.

“You don't have Bluebird.”

“I don't need the trust.”

“What do you need?”

He raised the folder.

“Your signature.”

I understood.

He wanted me to voluntarily transfer the authority.

He had prepared another document.

A legal surrender.

He had planned everything.

I looked at the cameras.

Security couldn't get in.

Then I smiled.

Arthur frowned.

“What?”

“You made the same mistake Grant made.”

“Which was?”

“You thought I was alone.”

The study speakers activated.

Evelyn Cross's voice filled the room.

“You are being recorded.”

Arthur froze.

Federal agents entered through the hidden door.

He had forgotten one thing.

The Kingsley study had multiple emergency exits.

My father had designed them.

Arthur's expression collapsed.

Agents arrested him.

For the first time, I saw him without control.

Just an old man who had spent decades believing he could manipulate everyone.

He looked at me.

“You'll regret this.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“I'll regret that I trusted you.”

But I won't regret ending this.”

He was taken away.

The Bluebird documents were secured.

The empire was safe.

Ellie was safe.

And the plan was finally over.

At least, I thought it was.

Because the next morning, the final file arrived.

The first page read:

BLUEBIRD — FINAL BENEFICIARY RECORD

The beneficiary wasn't Ellie.

It was me.

And beneath my name was a handwritten note:

She must choose whether the empire survives.
