Chapter 4 - The Night Grant Took My Daughter

I had never known fear like that.

It was not the fear of losing money.

Or a company.

Or a marriage.

It was the terrifying realization that my child was no longer where I had left her.

I ran downstairs.

Security was already moving.

“Where is Mr. Mercer?”

The head of security shook his head.

“He left through the east gate.”

“With Ellie?”

“Yes.”

I grabbed my phone.

“Lock every exit.”

“We already have.”

“Call the police.”

“Yes, ma'am.”

Evelyn Cross arrived moments later.

Her face went pale when I told her.

“We need the emergency trust provisions.”

“Now.”

She opened her laptop.

“Ellie is not simply a child in this situation.”

“I know.”

“She is a protected beneficiary.”

“What does that mean?”

“The trust can activate emergency protective custody.”

“Then activate it.”

Evelyn began typing.

Then stopped.

“I need one more authorization.”

“From who?”

“The independent trustee.”

“Who is that?”

She looked at me.

“Conrad Vale.”

My stomach dropped.

“No.”

“Yes.”

He had been the man behind Grant's plan.

And he controlled the emergency trustee authority.

I stared at the screen.

“If he controls the trustee, we're trapped.”

“No.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“There is a secondary provision.”

“What?”

“If the trustee is compromised, the Kingsley chairwoman can suspend the trustee.”

“I am the chairwoman.”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

Evelyn hesitated.

“You need to sign a declaration stating that the trustee is compromised.”

“I'll sign it.”

She placed the document before me.

I signed.

The moment the signature was recorded, Bluebird activated.

Every trust account froze.

Every transfer stopped.

Every investment movement was suspended.

And Conrad's authority disappeared.

For several seconds, no one spoke.

Then my phone rang.

Grant.

I answered.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Then:

“She is safe.”

“Bring her home.”

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

“You destroyed everything.”

“No.”

“You destroyed our marriage.”

“You destroyed your daughter's safety.”

His voice changed.

“You don't know what Bluebird is.”

“Yes, I do.”

“You think it's money.”

“I know it's not.”

He went silent.

Then he said:

“Conrad told me you would never understand.”

“And he was wrong.”

“Where is Ellie?”

“She's safe.”

“Prove it.”

A sound came through the phone.

A child's voice.

“Mommy?”

My knees almost gave way.

“Ellie!”

I heard her.

She was crying.

“Mommy, I'm here.”

“Put her on the phone.”

Grant spoke.

“She has everything she needs.”

“Put her on the phone.”

“I want to explain.”

“Put my daughter on the phone.”

He did.

“Mommy?”

“Ellie, are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“I don't know.”

I could hear her crying.

“Daddy said we're going somewhere.”

I closed my eyes.

“Listen to me.”

“Stay with your father.”

“Don't be afraid.”

“Mommy is coming.”

Then Grant took the phone.

“You need to sign a document.”

“No.”

“A custody agreement.”

“No.”

“If you don't sign, she remains with me.”

“That's kidnapping.”

“You won't prove it.”

“I don't need to.”

“Why?”

“Because you're on a recorded call.”

Silence.

Grant's breathing changed.

“You're bluffing.”

“No.”

I looked at the federal investigator standing beside me.

He nodded.

The call was being preserved.

Grant finally understood.

The mistake was not taking Ellie.

It was calling me.

He hung up.

The location was traced within minutes.

A private airfield.

Conrad had already arranged a flight.

Police and federal agents moved immediately.

I arrived first.

Grant stood beside a small aircraft.

Ellie was in his arms.

He looked at me.

For the first time, he seemed broken.

“Mara.”

I stepped forward.

“Give me my daughter.”

He hesitated.

“Please.”

Ellie reached for me.

“Mommy.”

I held out my arms.

“She belongs with me.”

Grant looked at Ellie.

Then at me.

He finally handed her over.

I pulled her into my arms.

She buried her face against my shoulder.

I could feel her shaking.

I held her tightly.

Then I looked at Grant.

“You are never touching her again without a court order.”

He lowered his head.

Behind him, federal agents approached.

They arrested him.

Not for infidelity.

Not for a divorce dispute.

For conspiracy.

Fraud.

Interference with a protected trust.

And unlawful removal of a child.

But one person was missing.

Conrad.

He had disappeared before agents reached the airfield.

His office was empty.

His house was empty.

His phones were off.

Then I received an email.

One sentence.

If you want to know why Bluebird exists, come to your father's old study alone.

I looked at Ellie.

May you like

Then at the message.

The truth was still waiting.
