Chapter 18 - NATHAN WITHOUT DOREEN

Two years passed.
Nathan changed slowly.
Not dramatically.
He moved into a small apartment.
He stopped working for Doreen’s family business.
He took a position at an insurance company.
He continued therapy.
He paid child support without complaint.
He attended every permitted visit.
Eventually, supervision ended.
Leah was terrified the first time Owen left alone with him.
Nathan understood.
He sent one message after arriving at the park.
WE’RE HERE.
Another twenty minutes later.
HE HAS EATEN HALF A BANANA AND THROWN THE OTHER HALF AT A DUCK.
Leah laughed.
It was the first time Nathan had made her laugh in years.
Not because she wanted him back.
Because co-parenting had finally become ordinary.
That mattered.
Doreen sent letters through attorneys.
Leah kept them sealed.
When Owen was old enough, he could choose.
Nathan never pressured her.
One afternoon, he returned Owen after a visit.
“Mom asked me to bring him to see her.”
Leah’s body tightened.
“What did you say?”
“No.”
She stared at him.
Nathan continued.
“She said she was sick.”
“And?”
“I told her being sick does not erase a court order.”
Leah exhaled.
That sentence was small.
But it proved something.
Nathan could finally tolerate his mother’s disappointment.
That had once seemed impossible.
Before leaving, he looked at Leah.
“I used to think protecting someone meant keeping everyone calm.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“Now I think it means being willing to make the wrong person angry.”
Leah looked at Owen playing on the rug.
May you like
“Yes.”
“That’s closer.”
