Chapter 17 - DOREEN’S SENTENCE

Doreen eventually accepted a plea agreement on several financial and fraud-related charges.
Other allegations were resolved separately.
She lost access to the charitable foundation.
She paid restitution.
She lost board positions.
Her assets were partially liquidated.
Most importantly to Leah, a long-term protective order barred her from unsupervised contact with Owen.
At sentencing, Doreen asked to speak.
She turned toward Nathan first.
“I did everything for you.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No.”
The word came quietly.
Doreen froze.
“You were always weak after your father died.”
Nathan continued.
“And I let you make my fear feel like loyalty.”
Doreen’s face hardened.
“I protected this family.”
Nathan shook his head.
“You protected your control.”
Leah watched him.
A year earlier, he would never have said those words.
Doreen turned toward Leah.
“You destroyed my son.”
Leah did not respond.
The judge did.
“Mrs. Carver.”
Doreen faced forward.
The sentence was imposed.
When officers escorted her away, she looked older.
For the first time, Leah did not feel frightened of her.
She felt sad.
Not for Doreen.
For the years everyone had confused her domination with strength.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Leah avoided them.
Mae walked beside her.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
Leah smiled.
“No.”
Mae laughed.
“That’s a much healthier answer.”
Owen was ten months old now.
He was waiting with Adrian.
The moment Leah picked him up, he grabbed her hair.
She laughed.
“Great.”
“After everything I survived, this is how I go.”
Adrian smiled.
“He has excellent legal representation.”
Leah looked at her son.
For months, Doreen had treated Owen like access to money.
Nathan had treated him like something he might lose.
The hospital had nearly treated him like property to transfer.

Leah wanted something different.
Owen would grow up knowing he belonged to himself.
