Chapter 17 - The Forty-Eight-Hour Lie

They found Ethan in the medical chamber with Rowan strapped to a table and a syringe on the floor. He had escaped custody through a maintenance tunnel while his attorney created a diversion at the front gate.Reyes entered first, weapon raised.“Step away from the child.”Ethan looked at Madison. “You opened the system.”“You taught me.”“You were never supposed to understand it.”“You were never supposed to lock me in.”Rowan cried harder. Madison could see the oxygen monitor clipped to her tiny finger.“Her numbers are falling,” Madison said.“Because you frightened her.”“Because you sedated her.”“I gave her what she needed.”“You gave her what you gave me.”Ethan picked up the syringe.Reyes’s voice became quiet. “Put it down.”“You think I’m going to hurt her?”“I know you’ve hurt her.”“I saved her from Madison.”Madison moved to the side, searching for a clear path to the table.“You told Patricia I was going to destroy the family,” she said.“You were.”“By leaving?”“By taking the company.”“You were afraid of a divorce.”“I was afraid of losing everything.”“So you planned my death.”He looked at Rowan. “The sedative was supposed to make you sleep. The lock was supposed to create an incident. You would wake in the hospital believing you had failed. You would sign the authority papers.”“But I started bleeding.”“The medication interacted with the injection.”“You didn’t know what it would do.”“I knew the risk.”“You knew the risk to my life.”“You were already unstable.”Madison reached the table.“You came back at 7:18,” she said. “After leaving.”“To check the system.”“You entered with the quiet code.”“Yes.”“You watched me bleed.”“I called the ambulance.”“No. I called the ambulance.”Ethan’s hand tightened around the syringe.“You came back because you needed to remove the monitor,” Madison continued. “You wanted the medical record to show I ignored it.”“The monitor was malfunctioning.”“You opened the door for yourself, then rewrote the public history.”“The system was protecting me.”“The system was protecting your story.”Reyes moved one step closer.“You don’t understand,” Ethan said. “If I lost the company, thousands of families would lose their security.”“You sold them surveillance.”“I gave them safety.”“You gave them a lock that remembers who deserves to leave.”Rowan’s monitor began to beep.Madison reached for her.Ethan raised the syringe.Reyes fired. The shot struck Ethan’s hand. The syringe fell and shattered.Madison lifted Rowan, pressing the baby against her chest.“Her breathing is shallow,” she said.“Get her out,” Reyes ordered. The building speakers came alive.“Security event recorded,” said the house.Ethan laughed through the pain.“You think a recording will save you?”Madison carried Rowan toward the door. “No. The truth will.”Reyes cuffed Ethan. As they passed the control room, Madison saw a file uploading on the main monitor. The activity history.Every quiet entry, every suppressed exit, every remote medical command. The system was sending its private archive to the police server.“He can’t erase it now,” the technician said.“How did it upload?”Madison looked at the emergency button.“Medical Safety Mode overrides administrative authority.”Outside, rain washed the cannery roof. Paramedics took Rowan and Madison into separate ambulances.Ethan was led past them, his wounded hand wrapped in gauze.“Madison,” he called. She did not turn.“You’ll regret this.”She looked down at Rowan’s face.“No,” she said. “I regret believing you.”At the hospital, doctors confirmed Rowan had received a sedative but would recover. Madison’s incision had partially opened during the chase. She needed surgery again. Before they wheeled her away, Reyes stood beside the bed.“The archive shows Ethan returned to the house at 7:18,” she said. “It also shows a remote command from his account at 6:40.”“The injection.”“We found the compound in the original server logs.”Madison closed her eyes.“The lock remembered,” she whispered.Reyes nodded. “So did you.”
