The hospital locked down the neonatal unit, but Ethan still had legal access to Rowan’s chart. He had entered the father’s name on every form, and the system treated his signature as a key.Madison sat beside the incubator while Reyes questioned nurses in the hall.“He came here twice after visiting hours,” one nurse said. “He said he was checking on the monitor.”“Did he touch Rowan?” Reyes asked.“Not directly.”Madison turned. “What does that mean?”The nurse looked uncomfortable. “He adjusted the humidifier.”“Why?”“He said it was too high.”Rowan’s oxygen dipped that night but recovered without intervention. The hospital’s security footage showed Ethan standing at the incubator for ninety seconds, his hand inside the access port.The forensic technician enhanced the image. Ethan was holding a tiny black device.“That isn’t hospital equipment,” Reyes said.Madison recognized it from the bedroom recording. “It’s a Nestor sensor.”“What does it do?”“It measures motion, temperature, breathing. Or it can interfere with another sensor.”Reyes took out her phone. “The hospital is removing him from the visitation list.”“He’ll fight it.”“Let him.”Lila arrived with a laptop and a split lip. She put it on the table.“I got into Ethan’s old account,” she said.“How?”“He used my birthday as a recovery answer.”Madison opened the files. There were hundreds of folders with names disguised as invoices. Most contained fragments of code. One held a recording dated the day before the emergency.Ethan’s voice played first.“The quiet code doesn’t show in the customer dashboard.”Another man answered. Madison recognized Dr. Hart.“What happens if the patient is already compromised?”“The monitor reports a false baseline.”“And if the lock activates?”“It looks like a protective response.”Madison pressed pause.Lila whispered, “He built it for you.”“He built it for anyone who paid.”They continued.“The wife can’t know,” Hart said.“She won’t. She’ll be sedated.”“You said the pregnancy would be over.”“I said the risk was acceptable.”Madison’s body became cold from the inside out.“That’s enough,” Reyes said.“No,” Madison replied. “We need the rest.”Ethan spoke again. “Patricia handles the money. After the event, I need the medical notes to establish instability.”Hart asked, “And the child?”“If she survives, the trust complicates things. If she doesn’t, Madison signs.”Madison stopped the recording.For several seconds, nobody moved.Then Rowan’s monitor alarmed.Her heart rate fell.Madison surged to her feet, but nurses rushed in and closed the curtain. The baby’s body disappeared behind blue gowns and moving hands.“What happened?” she cried.“Step back, Mrs. Mercer.”“She was stable.”Reyes caught Madison by the shoulders. “Let them work.”The alarm continued.On the laptop, a small notification appeared.Remote device connected.Madison stared at it. “The sensor is still active.”Lila unplugged the laptop from the hospital network. The alarm stopped.Inside the curtain, the nurse called, “Her oxygen is coming up.”Madison covered her mouth.Reyes took the laptop. “We’re seizing this.”“Copy it first.”“Why?”“Because if Ethan can access one device, he may have backups.”The recording file showed a hidden attachment. Madison clicked it.There was a map of the house, marked with red dots. One dot pulsed in the primary bedroom. Another pulsed beneath the nursery floor.“There’s a basement,” Lila said.“We don’t have a basement.”“The original house did.”Madison remembered the renovation. Ethan had told her the old foundation was sealed, too unstable to use. She had once heard a hollow sound beneath the nursery and accepted his explanation about plumbing.Reyes looked at the map. “We’ll get a warrant.”“By then he’ll erase it.”“We have enough for an emergency search.”Madison looked through the glass at Rowan, whose tiny chest rose and fell.The quiet code had been designed to disappear.But it had made one mistake.It had trusted Ethan to keep secrets from a woman who spent her life restoring what other people tried to bury.
