Chapter 18 - SEVENTY-FOUR SECONDS
The anonymous message arrived less than an hour after the hearing.
This time Ruiz treated it as part of the active criminal case immediately.
The number was a prepaid line.
The account had been activated that morning.
The message contained no threat.
Ruiz replayed the silent patio clip frame by frame.
At one point Daniel's hand rested on the door handle.
The image was visible for less than a second.
Claire asked the technician to stop there.
Daniel could have opened it.
He was physically touching the way into the room.
The technician said nothing.
Ruiz said nothing.
Claire stared at the frozen hand and understood why the clip hurt differently from the longer video.
The full video showed planning.
This frame showed choice.
No drug clouded Daniel's judgment.
No hidden voice confused him.
He knew what was happening because he had arranged it.
Still, he waited.
It contained something more destabilizing.
Daniel wasn't the first person watching you.
Claire read the sentence while sitting in a secured room at the courthouse.
Nora stood beside her.
Ruiz paced near the door.
"Who knew about your call to Nora before Saturday?"
"Nobody."
"Think."
Claire closed her eyes.
She had called from the parking lot of her architecture firm after receiving a financial statement she did not understand.
She sat in her car.
She spoke for twelve minutes.
Then she went back inside.
"Maybe someone at work saw me."
"Seeing you on a phone doesn't tell them who you called."
Claire looked at Nora.
"Did your office log the number?"
"Yes."
Nora pulled up the intake record.
Claire's mobile number appeared.
No one else should have known.
Ruiz requested the carrier records for Claire's line.
The records showed something unusual.
For months, calls from Claire's phone had been mirrored through a device-management service.
Claire had never authorized such a service.
Her phone had once been part of Daniel's family business account before she moved it to a personal plan.
A management profile remained installed.
Daniel had administrator access.
He could not necessarily hear live calls through ordinary settings, but the profile gave him access to metadata and backups that Claire believed were private.
The discovery was disturbing but not the answer to the message.
Daniel was in custody again after the hearing because prosecutors filed new charges based on the video.
He could not easily have activated the prepaid line that morning.
Someone else was still moving pieces.
Police examined Rebecca's and Lucas's devices.

Then Nora remembered Dr. Foster's warning.
Rebecca had worked at Claire's clinic.
Daniel had accessed private material through more than one route.
The investigation widened to include anyone who had exchanged records with him.
A name surfaced in an email chain.
Peter Walsh.
Peter was the independent trust administrator assigned to Emma's account.
Claire had met him twice.
He was quiet, professional, and had always seemed protective of the trust restrictions.
Emails showed Peter had sent Daniel preliminary notices about the April financial review before sending them to Claire.
That was not necessarily improper.
Daniel was a co-manager.
Then forensic accountants found something else.
Peter had delayed reporting one of Daniel's failed investment disclosures.
A delay of twelve days.
During those twelve days, Daniel shifted money overseas.
Ruiz interviewed Peter.
Peter denied wrongdoing.
He said the delay was administrative.
Then police showed him the foreign transfer.
Peter asked for a lawyer.
By evening, investigators had a new theory.
Daniel had not invented the financial crisis alone.
He had been covering losses in an investment venture connected to Peter.
Peter had quietly benefited from fees routed through a consulting company.
If the trust review exposed Daniel, it could expose Peter too.
That gave Peter a reason to want Claire discredited.
It also explained how Daniel knew Claire had spoken to Nora.
Nora had emailed Peter's office for a copy of the trust summary after Claire's initial call.
The email was ordinary.
Peter saw it.
He told Daniel.
The supposed custody plot had another silent partner.
Claire felt disgust more than surprise.
"How many adults needed Emma to be afraid before somebody thought this was too much?"
Ruiz did not answer.
Peter's phone records showed contact with Daniel the morning of the bat incident.
One call lasted ninety-one seconds at 10:34 a.m.
That was the same minute the living-room camera disconnected.
Peter claimed they discussed a filing deadline.
Daniel's recovered notes suggested otherwise.
A line under the word WITNESS read:

The independent administrator who was supposed to protect Emma's trust had apparently promised to delay financial scrutiny if Claire suffered a documented crisis.
The motive finally became complete.
Daniel needed time.
Peter needed silence.
Rebecca supplied behavioral language.
Lucas held hidden money.
Each adult told themselves their part was limited.
Together they built the room where Emma screamed.
Yet one detail still bothered Ruiz.
The full video from Lucas began at 10:36.
Daniel's phone metadata showed recording activity beginning at 10:36.
But the outdoor camera diagnostic buffer placed Daniel at the glass at 10:34.
Two minutes remained unaccounted for.
Then technicians recovered a second clip from the damaged cabin drive.
It was not from Daniel's phone.
It came from the patio camera itself.
The clip had no audio.
It began at 10:34:42.
Claire, Ruiz, and Nora watched it in the digital lab.
Daniel stood outside the glass.
Inside, Claire was upstairs.
Emma sat alone in the living room.
Daniel looked through the door.
He checked his phone.
He waited.
At 10:35:03, Claire appeared at the top of the stairs.
She held the banister as if dizzy.
Daniel did not enter.
At 10:35:11, Emma looked toward the patio and saw him.
She waved.
Daniel raised one finger to his lips.
Claire saw that gesture and stared toward the glass.
Daniel stepped out of Emma's direct view.
Then the blue light came on.
The first whisper began moments later.

Seventy-four seconds.
Seventy-four seconds during which Daniel knew his wife was impaired.
Seventy-four seconds during which his daughter was inside.
Seventy-four seconds during which he could have opened the door and ended everything before the bat entered Claire's hands.
He chose not to.
Ruiz stopped the video.
Claire stared at the frozen image of Daniel beside the glass.
She had spent days imagining him as a man who made one monstrous decision.
The clip showed something colder.
He had time to reconsider.
He had time to stop.
He waited anyway.
Nora whispered.
"This changes the criminal case."
Ruiz nodded.
Claire's phone vibrated again.
Another message from the prepaid number.
