Chapter 15 - THE CABIN

Daniel was arrested before sunrise on charges related to evidence tampering and violating court restrictions.

The more serious charges were still being prepared.

He spent the morning in county jail while his attorney argued for release.

By noon, the judge granted a high bond with electronic monitoring and a strict prohibition on contact with Emma, Claire, Sarah, or any potential witness.

Claire was furious that he walked out.

The cabin search also uncovered a small stack of family photographs Daniel had removed from the house.

Most featured Emma.

First day of kindergarten.

A beach trip.

Christmas morning.

Claire stared at the evidence photographs and felt an unexpected ache.

Daniel had packed memories beside cash and travel documents.

That suggested he had not imagined himself as a villain fleeing with stolen money.

He had imagined a future in which he was still Emma's father, still taking pictures, still telling himself he had saved their family.

The self-deception made the plan more frightening, not less.

People could do enormous harm while preserving a private image of themselves as loving.

Nora reminded her that the criminal case had only begun.

"He staged a break-in around his own child."

"And the prosecutor will use that."

"He drugged me."

"They are building that charge."

"He watched Emma scream."

Nora's face tightened.

"And we still need the full video."

That missing video had become the center of everything.

Daniel had deleted the local copy.

The patio camera buffer preserved only fragments.

His phone contained metadata showing a video had been created at 10:38 a.m. and deleted at 10:51.

The file itself had not yet been recovered.

Cloud backups showed no obvious copy.

Ruiz believed Daniel had moved it somewhere before police arrived.

The question was where.

Forensic technicians found an encrypted folder on Daniel's laptop labeled TAX ARCHIVE 2023.

Inside were financial spreadsheets, copies of Claire's private conversations, and dozens of short video clips documenting ordinary family moments in ways that could be framed negatively.

Claire raising her voice after Emma spilled paint.

Claire asleep on the sofa while Emma watched television.

Claire forgetting a lunchbox.

Claire crying after an argument.

Nothing illegal.

Nothing dangerous.

Everything curated.

There was no bat video.

Then technicians found a deleted map history entry on Daniel's phone.

It showed repeated trips to a cabin near Lake Mercer, ninety minutes outside the city.

Claire knew the place.

Daniel's father had owned it before he died.

The family rarely used it anymore.

Daniel had told Claire he planned to sell it.

Instead, he had visited six times in two months.

Ruiz obtained a search warrant.

The cabin sat at the end of a gravel road surrounded by pine trees and late-summer weeds.

No one was inside.

The air smelled stale.

In a locked desk, police found cash, a passport, copies of Emma's birth certificate, and a folder containing international school brochures.

Claire stared at the inventory list when Nora showed her.

"He was going to take her."

"Possibly."

"Why else have her birth certificate and a passport there?"

Nora did not answer.

The passport was Daniel's.

Emma's passport had expired the previous year and remained in Claire's locked file box at Megan's house.

That offered some relief.

Then police found a completed application for a replacement child passport, unsigned.

The emergency contact listed was not Claire.

It was Rebecca Sloan.

The room went cold.

Rebecca's cooperation suddenly looked less innocent.

Ruiz brought her back for another interview.

She swore she knew nothing about the passport form.

The signature was not hers.

Daniel had entered her information without permission.

Forensic analysis supported her claim.

The form had been created on Daniel's laptop.

The most important discovery at the cabin was not paper.

It was a small network storage device hidden behind the desk.

The drive was unplugged.

Technicians took it to the lab.

It contained backups from Daniel's home computer dating back five years.

Most were mundane.

Tax returns.

Family photos.

Work files.

Then a folder appeared under an old automatic-backup directory.

HOME_CAM_CACHE.

The files were incomplete, but the directory included Saturday morning.

Ruiz called Claire before the extraction was finished.

"We may have the original video."

Claire sat down.

"May?"

"The drive is damaged."

"Can they recover it?"

"They're trying."

"How long?"

Ruiz ignored the question.

"There's something else."

He told her about the international school brochures.

One school was in Costa Rica.

Another in Panama.

A third in Belize.

Daniel had researched residency rules and long-term rentals near each one.

Claire felt the floor disappear beneath her.

"He was planning to leave."

"It looks like he was considering it."

"With Emma."

"The passport application suggests that possibility."

Claire stood and began pacing.

"He wasn't just trying to get custody."

Nora, listening on speaker, finished the thought.

"He was building a legal window to move before anyone could stop him."

That explained the urgency.

The trust review threatened his finances.

The custody plan offered access and control.

Leaving the country offered distance.

But there was still a missing motive.

Running with Emma would make Daniel's problems larger, not smaller.

Unless he believed something else was about to happen.

At 6:20 p.m., the forensic accountant called Nora.

He had found a transfer Claire had never seen.

Three weeks before the bat incident, Daniel moved $190,000 into a foreign brokerage account through an intermediary company.

The company was controlled by a man named Lucas Grant.

Claire knew the name.

Lucas had been Daniel's closest friend in college.

They had stopped speaking years earlier after a business dispute.

At least that was what Daniel told her.

Ruiz searched recent communications.

Daniel and Lucas had not stopped speaking.

They had exchanged encrypted messages for months.

Most were unavailable.

One cloud notification remained.

Plan B only works if you have the girl.

Claire read the line and felt physically sick.

"The girl."

The same phrase Rebecca used.

Emma had become an asset in conversations among adults who claimed to be protecting her.

Police located Lucas in another state.

He refused to answer questions without counsel.

Then a second message fragment surfaced.

D can't know the video is copied.

Ruiz stared at the initial.

D almost certainly meant Daniel.

If Lucas had copied the bat video, he might still have it.

Before police could obtain a warrant for Lucas's devices, Lucas disappeared.

His car was found at an airport parking garage.

Flight records showed he had purchased a ticket to Mexico City.

He never boarded the plane.

A security camera captured him leaving the terminal in a rideshare car.

The trail ended there.

Late that night, Claire's phone received a message from an unknown encrypted account.

No words.

Only a photograph.

It showed the Lake Mercer cabin from across the road.

The timestamp was fifteen minutes old.

Claire forwarded it to Ruiz immediately.

Then a second message arrived.
