Two weeks later, Sarah was officially discharged from the hospital. The winter storm had passed, leaving bright sunshine reflecting off the pristine snow covering the Cascade Mountains.
We drove back to my estate together. For the first time in seven years, the massive glass house did not feel empty or cold.
When the front door opened, Lily came running down the hallway, followed closely by Rosa, who was carrying Owen and Ethan.
"Mommy!" Lily shouted, throwing her arms around Sarah's waist.
Sarah dropped to her knees, wincing slightly from her healing injuries, and pulled Lily tight against her chest. "My brave girl. My smart, brave girl."
I stood back near the entryway, watching the reunion. The heavy weight that had rested on my chest for nearly a decade finally began to lift.
Over the next few months, life at the mountain estate shifted completely. The empty, silent rooms were transformed into vibrant spaces filled with toys, cribs, and the constant noise of growing children. I adjusted my surgical schedule at the hospital, stepping back from administrative duties to ensure I was home every evening.
