Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Spring

By May, the mountain snow had completely melted, replaced by green pine trees and wild mountain flowers. The cold, forbidding landscape that had nearly claimed my family was now filled with light and warmth.
It was Lily’s sixth birthday. We gathered on the wide back terrace overlooking the valley—Sarah, the twins crawling across a large blanket, Rosa, Sheriff Miller, and myself.
Lily sat at the head of a wooden table, wearing a bright yellow dress, staring at a chocolate cake with six lit candles.
"Make a wish, Lily," Sarah said, smiling warmly. Her cheeks had regained their color, and the shadow of fear that had dominated her life for years was completely gone.
Lily closed her eyes, blew out the candles, and looked up at us with those bright green eyes.
"What did you wish for?" I asked, handing her a small wrapped gift.
"I don't need to wish for anything," Lily said with the simple clarity of a child who had survived the worst. "We're already home."
She opened the box. Inside was a silver bracelet, freshly polished and restored, with a new inscription added right below her mother's name:
Property of the Carter Family. Safe with Nathan.
May you like
Sarah looked at the bracelet, then up at me, offering a silent nod of profound gratitude. I walked over, placing a hand on my sister's shoulder as we watched the children play in the grass under the warm afternoon sun.
The house on the mountain was no longer a fortress built to keep the world out. It was a home built to keep the people I loved safe, warm, and together forever.
