Chapter 7 - Facing the Boardroom

The ultimate test came on a rainy Friday morning—exactly two weeks after we had been thrown out into the storm. It was time for the emergency shareholder and board of directors meeting at the gleaming Callahan Tower downtown.
Benjamin insisted on coming with me. "Dad wanted me to learn how to protect the family, Mom. Please let me sit in the back of the boardroom."
I agreed. Wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit that Rebecca had helped me pick out, I walked through the grand glass doors of Callahan Enterprises with my head held high. Benjamin walked beside me, carrying a leather briefcase containing Andrew’s original audit reports.
When we entered the opulent top-floor boardroom, the chatter among the senior executives instantly died. Seated near the foot of the table were Patrick and Margaret, looking decades older, their faces haggard and defeated. They had tried to enter the building earlier, only to find their executive badges deactivated by security. Rebecca had generously allowed them guest passes so they could witness the transition.
I walked straight to the head of the polished mahogany table—the exact seat Patrick had occupied for thirty years. I didn't sit down immediately; I simply looked around the room at the men and women who had once sneered at me at charity galas and family dinners.
"Good morning," my voice resonated clearly through the high-tech acoustic room. "As the majority owner and trustee of the Andrew Callahan Estate, I call this emergency session to order."
Patrick slammed his hand on the table, unable to contain his fury any longer. "You have no right to be here! This is a corporate entity, not a family playground for a gold-digging nobody!"
I didn't blink. I simply nodded to Rebecca, who clicked a remote, bringing up a massive financial slide on the smartboard detailing Patrick's illegal asset concealment and embezzlement of family trust funds.
"Mr. Callahan," I said softly, "you embezzled three million dollars from the employee pension fund in 2022. We have the wire transfer records right here. You can either step down quietly and accept a modest retirement stipend at the guest cottage, or we can hand these files directly to the federal prosecutor before noon."

The room fell into absolute, pin-drop silence. The other board members shifted uncomfortably in their chairs, quickly distancing themselves from Patrick with nervous coughs and averted eyes.
Patrick slowly slumped back into his chair, the last ounce of arrogance draining from his face. He looked defeated, broken by his own greed.
