Chapter 6 - Rebuilding and Restructuring

The first week back in the mansion was a whirlwind of legal paperwork, corporate restructuring, and family healing. Without the toxic shadow of Patrick and Margaret hovering over us, the house transformed. The sterile, museum-like feel of the rooms was replaced with the happy chaos of children—toys in the sunroom, the smell of baking cookies in the massive kitchen, and laughter echoing down the hallways.
Rebecca Stone set up a temporary office in the estate's mahogany-paneled library. Every morning, she and I reviewed the sprawling empire that Andrew had left behind.
"Cynthia, you have a major decision to make regarding Callahan Enterprises," Rebecca said on a crisp Tuesday afternoon, sliding a thick financial report across the desk. "Without Patrick at the helm, the board of directors is in absolute panic. Half of them want to resign; the other half want to beg you for mercy because they know about Patrick's financial misconduct."
I looked down at the documents. For fourteen years, I had been treated as an outsider, someone who didn't belong in the high-society world of corporate boardrooms and elite galas. But looking at the numbers, I realized Andrew had trained me well, quietly teaching me financial literacy during our late-night talks at the kitchen table.
"We aren't going to liquidate them, Rebecca," I said calmly.
Rebecca raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Are you sure? You have every legal right to strip them of everything, leave them penniless just like they tried to do to your children."
"No," I shook my head. "If we destroy the company out of spite, we become just like Patrick. Instead, we restructure. We fire the corrupt executives, reinstate the employee welfare funds that Patrick slashed, and turn Callahan Enterprises into a socially responsible firm. And as for Patrick and Margaret..."

I paused, a faint, knowing smile touching my lips. "We let them live in the small guest cottage by the stables on a strict monthly allowance—just enough to cover groceries and utilities, but not a penny more for their country club luxuries. They need to learn what it feels like to live on a budget."
Rebecca laughed out loud, leaning back in her chair with genuine admiration. "Andrew had exceptional taste, Cynthia. You are going to run this empire better than the old guard ever dreamed."
