Chapter 6 - The Siege at Saint Jude’s

The screen glowed in the dark office, projecting live footage from Room 402 of Saint Jude’s General.
Lily and Tommy’s room.
The beds were empty. The IV poles had been knocked sideways, their plastic bags leaking clear saline onto the linoleum floor. Standing in the center of the room, looking directly into the corner security lens with a chilling, dead-eyed smile, was Claire.
She held a small, silver-plated digital detonator in her right hand.
"She’s at the hospital," I gasped, the air leaving my lungs in a sharp rush.
"All units, code red! Suspect has breached Saint Jude’s pediatric wing!" Detective Vance shouted into his police radio as he bolted toward the door, drawing his weapon. "Lock down the perimeter! Nobody goes in or out!"
We raced through the empty city streets, Vance’s cruiser tearing through red lights with sirens screaming. Every second stretched into an eternity. My mind raced through a nightmare loop: Lily’s tired blue eyes, Tommy’s shallow breathing, the locked door at the end of the hallway, and now—this monster standing over my sleeping children.
When we arrived at the hospital, the lobby was in absolute chaos. Nurses and security guards were huddled behind the reception desk, whispering in terrified clusters. SWAT teams were already mobilizing in the stairwells, their heavy combat boots clanking against the concrete steps.
"Mr. Reynolds, stay back," Detective Vance commanded as we reached the fourth floor. "Let the tactical team handle the breach."
"Those are my children in there!" I yelled, adrenaline overriding every instinct of self-preservation.
Before Vance could grab my shoulder, I broke past the police line and sprinted down the corridor toward Room 402. The heavy wooden door was barricaded from the inside.
"Claire!" I screamed, slamming my fists against the wood. "Claire, open the door! Let the kids go! This is between you and me!"
A soft, eerie laugh echoed from inside the room. The speaker system in the hallway clicked on, broadcasting her voice across the entire floor.
"You always were easily manipulated, Mark," Claire’s voice purred, smooth and chillingly calm. "Seven years of playing the devoted housewife, cooking your dinners, tucking our babies into bed. And do you know what the funniest part is? I actually started to enjoy some of it. But blood is thicker than domestic bliss."
"Viktor is dead!" I shouted back, pressing my forehead against the cool wood of the door. "Your father’s crimes were his own! Why are you punishing innocent children?"
"Innocent?" Her voice turned sharp, laced with venom. "When Arthur Reynolds put my father away to rot in a maximum-security cell, he didn't care about innocent children. He watched my family starve on the streets while he received awards for civic duty. Now, it’s your turn to watch."
Through the frosted glass window of the door, I saw a flicker of movement.

She wasn't just holding a detonator. She was standing beside a makeshift gas canister wired into the hospital’s central oxygen line.
One click, and the entire pediatric wing would go up in flames.
