Chapter 10 - A New Chapter

We sold the old house by the end of that year.

It wasn't because of the ghosts or the memories—though there were plenty of both—but because Lily and Tommy deserved a fresh start in a home where every door opened freely to the sun, without secrets, without locked rooms, and without lies.

We moved to a cozy, sunlit cottage near the coast, where the sound of the ocean waves drowned out the echoes of what used to be.

On a bright Sunday afternoon in late spring, we sat on the back porch overlooking the rolling green lawn. Lily was busy sketching pictures of seashells on her oversized drawing pad, while Tommy chased a golden retriever puppy we had adopted the previous winter across the grass.

Rachel sat beside me, handing me a mug of hot coffee as we watched the children laugh.

"You know, Mark," Rachel said softly, her eyes warm with affection. "You really brought them through the storm."

I looked down at the coffee mug, feeling the warmth seep into my hands.

"I didn't do it alone," I said, glancing over at Lily as she ran across the grass to show me her drawing—a bright, vibrant picture of a house with wide-open doors, a golden sun overhead, and four stick figures holding hands.

"Look, Daddy!" Lily beamed, holding the paper up high. "Our new castle. And this time, there are no keys needed."

I took the drawing, my heart swelling with a profound, unshakable peace.

"That’s right, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing the top of her head as the ocean breeze carried our laughter out toward the endless horizon. "No keys at all."
