Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE BECAME A HOME AGAIN

The investigation ended.

The trials ended.

Victor was convicted.

Arthur remained in prison.

Garrick and Sabrina were serving their sentences.

The money was recovered.

The house was mine.

But I didn't want revenge anymore.

I wanted peace.

I rebuilt the greenhouse.

I planted tomatoes.

Just like Julian and Garrick had done when he was a child.

One spring morning, a little boy came to visit.

It was Garrick's son.

My grandson.

His name was Julian.

He had no idea what had happened.

He only knew that his father lived somewhere he couldn't visit often.

He asked me:

“Grandma, why do you have so many tomatoes?”

I laughed.

“Because your grandfather loved them.”

“Can I help?”

I handed him a small shovel.

“Yes.”

He knelt in the soil.

For a moment, I saw Garrick again.

Not the man who stole from me.

The little boy.

I didn't forgive what he had done.

But I didn't want to punish my grandson for his father's choices.

That was when I understood another truth.

Forgiveness didn't mean pretending.

It meant refusing to let one person's actions poison everyone who came after.

I established a trust for Julian.

Not from Garrick.

Not from Sabrina.

From me.

He would have security.

Education.

A future.

But he would also learn responsibility.

That was the legacy I wanted.

Not wealth without values.

Wealth with boundaries.

That summer, Clara and Brenda came for dinner.

We ate under the jasmine.

Clara looked around.

“This doesn't feel like the same house.”

“It isn't.”

“What changed?”

May you like

I smiled.

“The people.”
