Chapter 4 - THE LAWYER'S MASK

Arthur stood beside the windows of his office.

He looked like a king surveying a kingdom.

He smiled when I entered.

“Elena.”

“Arthur.”

He poured two glasses of scotch.

“To justice.”

I raised my glass.

“To Julian.”

Something flickered in his eyes.

Then disappeared.

He gestured toward the chair.

“Please.”

A stack of legal documents waited on the desk.

Yellow flags covered the pages.

Sign here.

Initial here.

Transfer authority.

Protective trust.

It was a masterpiece of deception.

He began explaining.

“The government has placed a temporary lien on your assets.”

I nodded.

“You need protection.”

“Yes.”

“I've created a new trust.”

“The Julian Vance Memorial Trust.”

“You'll receive a monthly stipend.”

“And the house?”

“Protected.”

I stared at the papers.

“What happens if I don't sign?”

He laughed.

“Don't be difficult.”

“You'll lose access to the assets.”

He leaned forward.

“You'll have nowhere to go.”

I looked at him.

“You mean the nursing home.”

His expression changed.

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“You really thought you could make me disappear.”

Arthur's voice became colder.

“Sign the papers.”

“Why?”

“Because I said so.”

The mask had slipped.

I set the pen down.

“Arthur.”

“Yes?”

“Do you know what I found?”

He didn't answer.

“My husband's ledger.”

Silence.

He stared at me.

Then laughed.

“That's unfortunate.”

“You poisoned Julian.”

“He had a heart condition.”

“You stole millions.”

“Those are allegations.”

“You manipulated Garrick.”

“You'll never prove it.”

“You created the fake deed.”

“No.”

“You arranged the LLC.”

“No.”

“You planned the nursing home.”

“No.”

I smiled.

“But you just admitted you knew about all of them.”

Arthur froze.

The room became silent.

He understood.

He had been talking.

He had been confessing.

I reached into my purse and pulled out the ledger.

I placed it on his desk.

Arthur's face turned white.

“Where did you get that?”

“Julian's attic.”

He reached for it.

I pulled it away.

“He wrote everything.”

Arthur leaned back.

“A dead man's paranoid notes.”

“Maybe.”

“But I don't need the ledger to ruin you.”

He stared.

“What?”

I pointed to my lapel.

A small silver brooch.

A microphone.

His eyes widened.

“The federal government has been listening.”

He stood.

“No.”

“Sit down.”

“You have no authority—”

“I don't need authority.”

“You came here to trap me.”

“Yes.”

Arthur laughed bitterly.

“You think I'm going to confess?”

I looked at him.

“You already did.”

He began pacing.

“Julian was a fool.”

I said nothing.

“He wanted to expose me.”

“Why?”

“Because he didn't understand the world.”

Arthur's voice became bitter.

“I built his empire.”

“I made the connections.”

“I moved the money.”

“I protected the contracts.”

“And he wanted to give it away.”

“What did he want?”

“Affordable housing.”

“Charities.”

“Scholarships.”

“He wanted to help people.”

Arthur laughed.

“That's not how power works.”

I looked at him.

“You killed him.”

He stopped.

“He had a bad heart.”

“You accelerated it.”

A smile appeared.

“Yes.”

The confession was simple.

Cold.

Without regret.

Then he revealed the rest.

He had manipulated Garrick.

He had encouraged the greed.

He had arranged for the forged deed.

And he had inserted a clause into the trust that would allow him to gain control if both heirs were convicted of defrauding the estate.

He had engineered the entire crisis.

Garrick and Sabrina had been pawns.

And I had been the final target.

“You're going to Shady Pines tonight,” he said.

“No.”

“I'm sorry?”

“You aren't sending me anywhere.”

Arthur laughed.

Then the doors opened.

FBI agents entered.

Agent Harris stood at the front.

“Arthur Sterling.”

Arthur stared.

“You…”

Harris raised the handcuffs.

“You are under arrest.”

Arthur looked at me.

“You planned this.”

I smiled.

May you like

“No.”

“I simply stopped pretending I was powerless.”
