The impact of the military gala reshaped the family dynamic permanently. The false hierarchy that Derek had maintained for years evaporated completely, replaced by a profound respect for the truth.
In the weeks following the gala, Derek made significant changes. Deprived of his bravado and forced to face his financial and personal failures, he enrolled in a legitimate vocational trade program and took a full-time job at a local logistics warehouse. For the first time in his marriage to Mallory, he was working hard without making excuses or fabricating glorious combat tales.

I smiled and placed my hand over hers. "I accept that, Mallory. I'm proud of you."

He enrolled both of them in a local martial arts defense academy, not to turn Caleb into a fighter, but to bond with him and build the boy's confidence.
