Chapter 6 - Truths Laid Bare

The next morning, the fallout from the Fourth of July confrontation spread across the extended family like wildfire. By noon, my mother had called three times, leaving anxious voicemails asking me to come over to her house to "smooth things over."
Instead of going alone, I called an emergency family meeting at my mother's home for two o'clock that afternoon. I instructed Mallory, Derek, and my mother to be present. I also insisted that Mark accompany me, not as a spectator, but as a united front.
When Mark and I walked into my mother's living room, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Derek sat on the sofa with a fake medical arm sling wrapped clumsily around his right shoulder, looking sour and defensive. Mallory sat beside him, red-eyed and pale. My mother was sitting in her favorite armchair, wringing her hands nervously.
"Laurel," my mother began, standing up. "Thank you for coming. We just want to restore peace to this family..."
"Peace requires honesty, Mom," I interrupted, standing in the center of the room. I remained standing, asserting an undeniable command presence.
I pulled a thick folder from my leather briefcase and laid it on the coffee table in front of Derek.
"What is this?" Derek grunted, trying to sound tough despite his lingering fear.
"That is a complete itemized statement of financial assistance I have provided to you and Mallory over the past five years," I said calmly. "It totals $42,500. It includes money for your truck, your credit card debt, your failed lawn care business venture, and Mallory's medical bills when you didn't have insurance."
Mallory gasped, turning to Derek. "Forty-two thousand dollars? Laurel, you said it was only fifteen!"
"Fifteen was just the last eighteen months, Mallory," I said firmly. "I paid these debts because you came to me crying, begging me not to tell Derek because it would hurt his pride. And I kept quiet. But while I was subsidizing your lifestyle, Derek was using every family dinner to call me a 'paper pusher' and mock my children."
Derek's face flushed deep purple. "You're trying to destroy my family!"
"You destroyed your own credibility the moment you decided to build your manhood on lies and intimidation," Mark suddenly spoke up, stepping forward and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me.
I looked at Mark, pleasantly surprised by the firmness in his voice.
"Derek," Mark continued, his voice steady and resolute. "You humiliated my son yesterday. You lied about your military service to make yourself look big while putting down my wife, who actually risked her life for this country. If you ever disrespect my wife or my kids again, you won't just be dealing with Laurel. You'll answer to me."
Derek opened his mouth to argue, but looking at Mark's uncompromising expression and knowing what I was capable of doing, he slowly closed his mouth and looked down at the floor.

My mother began to weep soft tears of remorse. "Laurel... I am so sorry. I didn't know... I should have protected you. I should have paid more attention."
"You should have, Mom," I said gently. "But today is about setting new boundaries. The lies stop now."
