Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

A year passed, and the echoes of the dark storm that brought Oliver to my door faded into a distant memory.

Our lives transformed in ways I could have never imagined during those long, lonely years of separation. Grant transformed the cold, corporate atmosphere of his family’s legacy into something meaningful. Together, we launched the Oliver Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing free pediatric medical care and legal defense for low-income families facing custody disputes and corporate intimidation.

My small clinic was completely renovated. We expanded the single treatment room into a full community health center, staffed by compassionate doctors and nurses who shared our vision. Above the entrance, a new carved wooden sign hung proudly: The Haven Clinic.

One sunny Saturday morning, Grant and I stood in the backyard of our home, watching Oliver run across the green lawn with a golden retriever puppy we had adopted for his sixth birthday. His limp was entirely gone, healed by proper care and months of physical therapy. He was tall, healthy, and his laughter filled the crisp morning air.

Grant stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly.

"I was just remembering the rainy night he walked into my clinic," I murmured, leaning back against his chest. "I used to wake up in the middle of the night terrified that I was dreaming, that I would open my eyes and find myself back in that empty apartment without either of you."

Grant turned me around gently, taking my hands in his. "You'll never have to feel that way again, Elise. I spent five years letting other people control my life and dictate who I should love. I swore to myself the day I brought Oliver home that I would spend the rest of my life making up for the time we lost."

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. My breath hitched.

"I know we were married once before, and I know our past was broken by lies," Grant said, his voice rich with emotion as he dropped to one knee on the soft grass. "But I want to build a future with you—one built on truth, trust, and unconditional love. Elise, will you marry me again?"

Tears of pure happiness overflowed down my cheeks. I knelt down beside him, throwing my arms around his neck.

"Yes," I whispered into his ear. "A thousand times, yes."

Oliver came running over, the puppy tumbling at his heels, barking joyfully. "Are we getting married?" he asked, his eyes wide with excitement.

Grant laughed, picking Oliver up in his arms and pulling both of us into a tight embrace. "Yes, buddy. We're getting married. The three of us."
