Chapter 5 - The Confrontation

The boardroom on the top floor of the Whitaker Medical Tower was a fortress of glass, steel, and dark mahogany. Evelyn Whitaker sat at the head of the long conference table, surrounding herself with board members she believed were loyal to her. She looked calm, majestic, and entirely in control—until the heavy oak doors swung open.
Grant walked in, followed by Sarah and me.
"Grant," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with ice as she stood up. "This is a private executive session. What is the meaning of this intrusion? And why is she here?"
"She is here because she is the mother of my child, and the woman whose life you tried to destroy," Grant said clearly, walking to the foot of the table. He laid a thick black folder onto the polished wood.
"Security," Evelyn called out, her voice trembling slightly. "Escort these people out."
"Security won't be coming, Evelyn," said Arthur Sterling, the senior board member sitting to her right. "Grant requested this meeting, and as the holder of forty percent of the company shares, he has every right to present his findings."
Evelyn's face paled. She looked around the table, realizing for the first time that her grip on the board was slipping.
Grant opened the folder. "Five years ago, my mother forged legal documents to fabricate a custody surrender agreement, effectively kidnapping my son from his mother. Over the past five years, she systematically isolated Oliver, subjected him to severe psychological abuse, and ignored medical neglect that resulted in his hospitalization last night."
"That's a lie!" Evelyn hissed. "The child ran away! He is unstable, just like his mother!"
"I have the medical report right here, Evelyn," I spoke up, stepping forward and placing my signed physician’s assessment on the table. "I am a licensed medical professional. I documented his physical injuries, his malnutrition, and the handwritten note from your personal stationery instructing him never to contact his father. If this goes to trial, every medical record, every forged document, and every eyewitness testimony from the staff you hired will become public record."
The board members began whispering frantically among themselves, exchanging horrified looks.
"Think about the reputation of Whitaker Enterprise," Grant continued, leaning over the table, staring his mother dead in the eye. "If this hits the press, the stock will plummet, and the company name will be forever ruined. But I am giving you one choice, Mom."
Evelyn gripped the edge of the table, her knuckles turning white. "What choice?"
"You resign immediately from the board," Grant said, his voice absolute. "You surrender all control over the family trust, you hand over the keys to the family estate, and you sign a legally binding restraining order guaranteeing you will never come within five hundred yards of Oliver or Elise ever again."
"And if I refuse?" she spat out, her eyes blazing with hatred.

"Then I walk out of this room, go straight to the District Attorney's office, and press criminal charges for fraud, forgery, and child abuse," Grant replied without hesitation. "You will exchange your penthouse for a prison cell."
The room fell completely silent. Evelyn looked at her board members, seeking a single ally, but every single one of them turned their eyes away. She was entirely, utterly alone.
