Chapter 8 - The Tables Turn

The kitchen felt utterly suspended in time.
Sophia stepped forward slowly out of the hallway, her hands covering her mouth, tears instantly spilling over her lower lashes.
“Me?” she whispered, her voice cracking. “A... a scholarship? For my designs?”
“For your vision, your resilience, and your extraordinary talent,” Mrs. Vance said with a beaming smile, sliding the formal scholarship agreement across the table. “It covers full tuition assistance for any accredited design or fine arts college in the country upon graduation next year, along with a featured exhibit at our annual Spring Gala.”
I looked from the glittering legal document to my daughter, a fierce, overwhelming wave of pride washing away every drop of residual bitterness from the past week.
“Thank you,” I managed to say, my own voice thick with emotion. “Thank you so much.”
Mr. Sterling, the legal counsel, cleared his throat with a small, knowing smirk.
“There is one more matter, Ms. Reyes. Regarding your family situation and the legal proceedings.”
I blinked, refocusing. “Go on.”
“Your sister, Melissa, attempted to file a counter-claim or public complaint with local media outlets claiming you acted out of malice to sabotage her family,” Mr. Sterling explained smoothly. “However, because Mrs. Vance and our foundation board are premier civic donors in this county, we happened to catch wind of the narrative. We provided an official character reference to local authorities praising your integrity as a community pillar, while highlighting the documented vandalism of your property.”
He slid a second, smaller document across the table—a notification from the police department.
“Furthermore, faced with the reality of authentic felony charges, photographic proof of destruction, and a total lack of community support for her petty behavior, your sister’s attorney has advised her to settle out of court.”

Melissa would be forced to pay full restitution for the ruined designer dress, sign a legally binding non-disparagement agreement, and issue a formal written apology to Sophia.
The nightmare was officially unraveling, replaced by absolute, undeniable vindication.
