Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Open

Equipped with the official document from Apex Diagnostics and Elena’s sworn eyewitness account, I didn't head straight to the police station. I knew that a woman of Madeline’s immense wealth and social influence could hire high-powered defense attorneys to tie up a statement in legal red tape for months. To save Luke and wake Brandon up from his trance, I needed a confrontation so direct, so undeniable, that Madeline’s facade would shatter irrevocably.

I called Brandon. When he didn't answer, I sent him a single text message: “If you ever loved our son, meet me at your mother’s house at 5:00 PM. I have the truth. If you don't show up, you will lose us both forever.”

At 4:45 PM, Elena let me into the main parlor of the Mercer estate. I stood by the fireplace, my heart hammering like a war drum in my chest, holding my handbag tightly.

At 5:02 PM, the front door swung open. Madeline walked in, dressed in an elegant silk blouse, holding a pair of leather driving gloves. Right behind her was Brandon, looking exhausted, dark circles under his hollow eyes, his face drawn with grief and confusion.

Madeline stopped dead in her tracks when she saw me standing in her living room. Her eyes flashed with immediate fury. "What is this trash doing in my house? Elena! Who let this woman inside?!"

"I let her in, Mother," Brandon said quietly, stepping around her. He looked at me, his voice trembling. "Sarah... you said you had the truth. What is this about?"

"It’s about the network of lies your mother has built to destroy our family, Brandon," I said clearly, stepping forward.

Madeline laughed mockingly, tossing her gloves onto a side table. "Brandon, call security immediately. The woman has clearly lost her mind due to her guilt. She’s trespassing."

"No, Brandon, don't call security," I said, reaching into my bag and pulling out the stamped document from Apex Diagnostics. I slapped it down onto the glass coffee table between us. "Read it."

Brandon frowned, stepping forward to pick up the paper. He scanned the official seal, the reference code, and the bold red lettering across the center.

"What... what is this?" Brandon asked, his brows knitting together. "Reference AM-88902... Status: Cancelled. Insufficient genetic material. No report issued?"

"Your mother gave you a fake DNA test, Brandon," I said, looking straight into his eyes. "Apex Diagnostics never generated a paternity report. The document she showed you in the hospital room was a forged template. She manufactured the entire lie to make you doubt me!"

Brandon turned slowly toward Madeline, his face draining of color. "Mother? Is this true?"

Madeline’s eyes narrowed, but she didn't flinch. "Don't be naive, Brandon! She probably went to the lab and bribed some low-level clerk to print a fake cancellation sheet! She’s a desperate, cheating woman trying to protect her access to your bank account!"

"I didn't bribe anyone, Madeline," I said smoothly. "And if you think that’s my only proof, you’re wrong."

I turned toward the hallway. "Elena, please come in."

Elena walked into the parlor, her head held high, though her hands were trembling slightly. She stood beside me, refusing to meet Madeline’s terrifying glare.

"Elena?" Brandon asked, bewildered. "What's going on?"

"Mr. Brandon," Elena said, her voice shaking but clear. "The morning of the family gathering, I saw your mother in her study upstairs. She was using a mortar and pestle to crush her prescription heart pills and allergy tablets into a fine powder. She put the powder in a glass vial and took it with her when she left for your house."

Brandon gasped, taking a step back as if he had been struck in the chest. "What?!"

"She’s lying!" Madeline shrieked, her voice dropping its regal polish and revealing a terrifying, raw desperation. "She’s a disloyal servant! I’ll fire you! I’ll have you deported by tonight, you ungrateful leech!"

"She’s not lying, Madeline," I interjected fiercely. "You took that vial to my house. You waited until I went upstairs to change Luke, walked into my kitchen, and sprinkled that toxic powder over the blackberry cobbler!"

"That's absurd!" Madeline raged, her chest heaving, her fingers curling into claws. "Why would I poison a cobbler that the boy was bringing to ME?! If he hadn't dropped it, I would have been the one to eat it! Do you think I’m stupid?!"

"You didn't intend to eat it, Madeline," I said, taking a step closer to her, unlocking the final piece of the puzzle. "You knew Luke was coming to give it to you. You intentionally swiped the plate out of his hands to shatter it on the patio stone!"

Madeline froze. The color instantly drained from her face.

"You knew that when the dish shattered," I continued, my voice echoing in the grand room, "the preserves would splatter all over his bare legs and hands. And what does a four-year-old child do when he’s crying, scared, and covered in sweet, sticky jam?"

Brandon’s eyes widened in utter horror as the awful truth dawned on him. "He... he licks his fingers. He licks his hands..."

"Exactly!" I shouted, tears of anger spilling over. "He licks his sticky fingers to wipe away the sweet jam! You knew he wouldn't eat the whole slice in front of you, but you made sure he ingested a concentrated dose of crushed medication off his own skin! You wanted him to suffer an acute attack right there in front of the entire family so you could claim I was an unfit mother who kept toxic drugs in the house!"

The silence in the parlor was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Brandon looked at his mother. The blind devotion, the lifelong conditioning, the hesitation—all of it vanished in an instant, replaced by a wave of pure, unfiltered disgust and rage.

"Mother..." Brandon whispered, his voice shaking with a terror that came from recognizing a monster in his own blood. "You... you tried to kill my son."

"Brandon, listen to me!" Madeline pleaded, reaching out to grasp his arm. "I did it for you! She’s not right for you! She ruined our family dynamic! She stole you away from me! That boy is soft, he’s weak—"

SLAP!

The sharp sound cracked through the room. Brandon had smacked her hand away with unbelievable force.

"Don't you ever touch me again," Brandon snarled, his eyes blazing with a fury I had never seen in him before. "You are not a mother. You are a monster."

Before Madeline could utter another word, the heavy wooden front doors of the estate were pushed open. Detective Miller stepped inside, flanked by two uniformed officers and two representatives from Child Protective Services.

"Madeline Mercer," Detective Miller said, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted aggravated assault of a minor, reckless endangerment, and fabrication of legal documents. You have the right to remain silent..."

As the metallic cuffs clicked around Madeline’s wrists, her dignified facade crumbled into a pathetic, screeching meltdown. She screamed at the officers, cursed at Elena, and begged Brandon to help her. But Brandon turned his back on her, refusing to give her a single glance as she was dragged out into the waiting police cruiser.
