Chapter 4 - The Unraveling Web

For forty-eight agonizing hours, I was trapped in a living hell. Luke was discharged from the hospital under the strict temporary custody conditions enforced by CPS. Because Madeline’s sprawling estate was deemed "a secure, high-resource environment," the agency granted her temporary guardianship while the police conducted their investigation. I was allowed only two hours of supervised visitation per day at a community center.

Brandon had moved out of our house and was staying at a hotel near his office. He wasn't answering my calls. Every time I dialed his number, it went straight to voicemail. The seed of doubt planted by his mother had taken root, poisoning his trust in me.

Sitting alone in our empty, quiet house, I refused to crumble. I knew I was innocent. I knew Luke was Brandon's biological son. And I knew that if I waited for the slow wheels of police bureaucracy to turn, Madeline would successfully strip my child away from me forever.

I stood up, wiped the dried tears from my cheek, and grabbed my coat. If the police weren't looking deep enough into Madeline Mercer, I would do it myself.

My first destination was Apex Diagnostics, the laboratory listed on the paternity report Madeline had dramatically presented at the hospital. The facility was located in an upscale medical park on the outskirts of the city. I walked through the glass sliding doors, my pulse racing.

The reception desk was manned by a young woman with a polite smile. "Hello, how can I help you today?"

"Hi," I said, forcing my voice to sound composed and professional. "My name is Sarah Mercer. My family recently had a paternity analysis processed through your lab, reference code AM-88902. I need to request a certified physical copy of the complete chain-of-custody documentation for my records."

The receptionist pulled up her computer system and typed in the reference number. She frowned slightly, her eyes scrolling across the screen. "Hmm, that's strange."

"Is something wrong?" I asked, leaning over the marble counter.

"Mrs. Mercer, according to our system, reference code AM-88902 was indeed issued by our system three weeks ago, but..." She paused, double-checking the file. "The test was never completed. The submitted sample kit was flagged as 'insufficient genetic material' and cancelled. No official report was ever generated by our lead lab technician."

A cold surge of adrenaline shot through my veins. "What? Are you absolutely sure?"

"Yes, ma'am. Look right here," she said, turning the monitor slightly toward me. "The status says 'Cancelled / Order Refunded'. We never issued a paternity match or mismatch result for this case."

Madeline hadn't just paid for a private test—she had completely forged the document. She had taken a blank or cancelled administrative template from Apex Diagnostics and fabricated a fraudulent 0% paternal match to tear Brandon and me apart!

"Can you print this status log for me?" I asked, my fingers trembling with renewed hope. "I need an official stamped statement from your lab director confirming that this document was never generated by Apex Diagnostics."

"I can certainly do that for you, ma'am," the receptionist replied, clicking her print command.

With the printed and stamped fraud confirmation tucked safely into my handbag, I felt a spark of fire reignite in my chest. The paternity claim was a fake. But I still needed to prove the poisoning—and I needed to figure out how Madeline had executed it without poisoning herself or the rest of the family.

My next stop was an unexpected one: Madeline's estate.

I knew she was currently at the CPS facility for Luke’s afternoon check-in session, which meant the house would be mostly empty, except for her live-in housekeeper, Elena. Elena had worked for the Mercer family for over fifteen years. She was a quiet, observant woman who had always treated me with gentle kindness whenever we visited, often expressing silent disapproval of Madeline’s haughty behavior.

I parked my car two blocks down from the gates of the Mercer estate and walked up the gravel driveway. I slipped through the side entrance near the gardens and knocked softly on the kitchen door.

After a moment, the heavy oak door creaked open. Elena looked out, her eyes widening in surprise when she recognized me. "Mrs. Sarah! What are you doing here? If Mrs. Madeline finds you..."

"Elena, please," I pleaded, holding my hands up. "I need two minutes. Just two minutes. You know me. You know I love Luke, and you know I would never hurt him or cheat on Brandon. Madeline is trying to ruin my life and take my son away."

Elena looked left and right across the manicured courtyard, her face etched with deep worry. She stepped back and gestured for me to come inside quickly.

"She is a very dangerous woman, Sarah," Elena whispered, locking the kitchen door behind us. "I have worked in this house for fifteen years. I have seen her destroy people who cross her. What she did at the party... it was horrible. Poor little Luke."

"Elena, do you know anything about what she did that morning?" I asked urgently. "Before she came over to our house for the gathering?"

Elena sank into a wooden chair by the kitchen island, wringing her apron in her hands. She looked terrified, but her eyes held a heavy burden of guilt. "I... I wasn't going to say anything. She threatened to fire me and make sure I was deported if I talked to anyone."

My heart leaped into my throat. "Talked about what, Elena? What did you see?"

"The morning of the party," Elena began in a trembling voice, "Mrs. Madeline was in her private study upstairs. She asked me to bring her a tray of tea. When I walked into the room, she didn't hear me because she was on the phone. She had several prescription pill bottles on her desk—her own beta-blockers for her heart condition, and heavy allergy pills she takes in the spring."

"She was crushing them?" I whispered, breathless.

"I saw her using a small mortar and pestle," Elena confessed, tears shimmering in her eyes. "She was crushing blue and white tablets into a fine powder and pouring them into a small glass vial. When she noticed me standing there, she slammed her laptop shut and screamed at me to get out. She said if I ever mentioned what I saw to Brandon or the police, she would destroy me."

"Elena..." I dropped to my knees in front of her, taking her worn hands in mine. "You have to tell this to the police. Please. That powder is what almost killed Luke. She put it into the pastry dish when she went into my kitchen!"

"She... she put it in the pastry?" Elena gasped, covering her mouth in horror. "My God. I thought... I thought she was planning to drug herself to fake an illness, or poison a dog... I didn't think she would target a child!"

"Will you come with me to the police station?" I begged her. "Will you sign an affidavit?"

May you like

Elena looked at me, tears spilling over her wrinkled cheeks. She looked around the opulent, cold kitchen where she had spent fifteen years being degraded and controlled by Madeline Mercer. Finally, she gave a firm, resolute nod.

"Yes," Elena said softly. "I will not let that evil woman destroy that sweet boy."
