Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web

The immediate arrest of Roberto Hernández at my hospital bedside sent seismic shockwaves through our extended family. As officers cuffed my father and led him down the corridor, his arrogant posture dissolved into desperate pleas. Outside the clinic, police intercepted my mother, Patricia, and Fernanda as they attempted to speed away in their sedan. Both were taken into custody—Fernanda for primary assault with intent to cause severe bodily harm, and my mother for conspiracy and harboring a suspect.

Alejandro stayed by my side through the night, ensuring top-tier medical care while his legal team, headed by the formidable Senior Partner Mateo Vance, went to work. By dawn, the medical staff confirmed that the epinephrine and steroidal treatments had stabilized my respiratory tract, though I required vocal cord rest.

While I recovered, Mateo brought us the first round of investigative findings. What had initially seemed like a sudden, irrational burst of entitlement from my family was actually the culmination of months of hidden desperation. For years, my father had maintained the illusion of a prosperous real estate consultancy in Mexico City. In reality, he had engaged in high-risk property speculation and predatory loans from unregistered lenders.

Fernanda, who had dropped out of two private universities and refused to hold down a job, had accumulated massive personal credit card debts and owed money to influential social circles in Santa Fe. My parents had systematically enabled her lifestyle, mortgaging their primary home to cover her expenses while telling themselves that my eventual marriage would solve all their financial ailments.

When Alejandro entered my life, my family assumed he would serve as an open checkbook. My refusal to treat my fiancé as a corporate bank had infuriated them. Fernanda’s demand for the 1.7 million peso SUV wasn't merely a luxury request—she had promised that vehicle as collateral to settle an urgent debt with a dangerous private creditor who was actively threatening her.

“They didn't just want a gift, Valeria,” Mateo explained quietly, placing a binder of financial audits on my bedside table. “They viewed your marriage as a hostile corporate takeover of Alejandro’s assets. When you said no, Fernanda acted out of a combination of extreme narcissism and sheer panic.”

I looked at Alejandro, holding his hand tightly. The shock of my family's betrayal had morphed into a profound, clarifying stillness. I was no longer the daughter who pleaded for minimal affection. I was a survivor of their malice, and I was ready to rebuild my life on my own terms.
