Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at Aldridge Street

A convoy of black armored SUVs sped through the rain-slicked streets of the city, escorting Nathaniel Graves and me toward the run-down district of Aldridge Street. Sirens weren't blaring, but the sheer presence of the high-end vehicles drawn up outside our crumbling apartment complex caused neighbors to peer out from behind torn curtains.

I sat in the back seat next to Nathaniel. He had given me a warm woolen jacket to put over my faded dress, and he held my hand the entire ride. He didn't force me to call him 'Dad', nor did he yell when I kept asking about Sarah. He listened patiently as I told him about how Sarah worked six days a week, how she always gave me the larger half of the bread, and how she stayed up late mending my clothes.

"She raised you with love, Ruby," Nathaniel said gently as the SUV pulled to a halt near the rusty bus bench where I had found the wallet just hours earlier. "Even if the origin of how you came to her was built on Vance's lie, she chose to protect you. I will never forget that."

We climbed the creaky, dark stairs up to the third floor. Apartment 3B had a peeling green door with a brass number '3' dangling upside down.

My heart pounded in my ears as Nathaniel gestured for his security guards to stay down the hallway out of sight. He wanted this to be gentle.

I took a deep breath and knocked on the door. "Mom? It's me, Ruby."

Heavy footsteps hurried toward the door. Locks clicked open, and the door flew wide.

Sarah stood there, her hair messy, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She held a faded dish towel in her hands. When she saw me standing there unharmed, she dropped to her knees and pulled me into her arms so hard I could barely breathe.

"Ruby! Oh, thank God! Where have you been?!" she sobbed, pressing kisses all over my forehead and cheeks. "I came home early from the diner and found your note... I thought someone had taken you!"

"I'm okay, Mom," I whispered, holding her tight. "I'm okay."

Then, Sarah looked up.

Her eyes met Nathaniel Graves, who was standing in the narrow, dimly lit hallway wearing his immaculate suit, his eyes full of sorrow and understanding.

Sarah froze. The color instantly drained from her cheeks, exact same way Nathaniel's face had paled in the lobby earlier. Her gaze shifted from Nathaniel down to the pink eviction notice sticking out of my pocket, and then back to Nathaniel's face.

She knew.

"Mr... Mr. Graves," Sarah whispered, her voice cracking. She slowly stood up, placing herself instinctively between me and Nathaniel, pushing me behind her back. "How... how did you find us?"

"Ruby found my wallet today, Sarah," Nathaniel said quietly, keeping his hands visible and stepping no closer. "And inside her backpack, I saw the Vance Development eviction code."

Sarah covered her face with her hands, a long, broken sob escaping her chest. She sank onto a small wooden kitchen chair just inside the apartment doorway.

"I didn't steal her," Sarah wept, her shoulders shaking violently. "I swear to God, Mr. Graves, I didn't know who she was! Twelve years ago, I was working as an assistant nurse at the clinic. A man offered me ten thousand dollars to take a baby who he claimed was abandoned by an unwed mother who had fled the country. My own baby had died in my arms three days prior... I was out of my mind with grief."

Nathaniel stepped inside the small, humble apartment, looking around at the cheap furniture, the patched walls, but also at the framed drawings I had made, the tidy bookshelves, and the small, clean bed in the corner.

"I believed him," Sarah continued, looking up at Nathaniel with tear-streaked eyes. "It wasn't until two years later, when I saw a news report about the anniversary of your family's tragedy and saw a picture of your late wife... that I realized who Ruby was. I saw her birthmark. I realized what I had done."

"Why didn't you bring her back?" Nathaniel asked softly, his voice devoid of anger, filled only with pain.

"I was terrified!" Sarah cried. "Julian Vance sent men to my door the very next week! They told me if I ever said a word to anyone, or if I tried to leave the state, they would kill both of us and make it look like an accident. They gave me that apartment, watched my every move, and forced me to stay where they could see me. I was trapped, Mr. Graves! But I loved her! I raised her as my own daughter because I couldn't bear to let those monsters take her back!"

Nathaniel took a long, deep breath. He walked over to Sarah, knelt beside her chair, and placed his hand gently over hers.

"Vance is in handcuffs," Nathaniel told her. "The police have his private records. The nightmare is over, Sarah. For both of us."

Sarah looked at Nathaniel in disbelief, then looked at me. "Ruby..." she whispered.

I stepped out from behind the chair and ran into her lap, wrapping my arms around her neck. "You're still my mom," I cried into her shoulder. "You'll always be my mom."

Nathaniel watched us, a soft, tearful smile gracing his face. "She has two parents now," he said quietly. "And no one is ever going to hurt this family again."
