Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Past

"Get down!" Marcus shouted, drawing a silver sidearm from his jacket and pulling me behind the heavy oak desk.

The air was suddenly filled with the sharp smell of smoke and ozone. Julian Vance wasn't going to wait for the police to arrive. He had used his private security team to override the floor's power grid, trying to breach the penthouse before Nathaniel could get the truth out to the authorities.

"Dr. Aris, take the girl to the safe room behind the bookcase!" Nathaniel ordered, his voice echoing with absolute authority despite the chaos. "Marcus, hold the main entrance!"

"I'm not leaving you!" I cried out, clinging to the edge of the desk. "I want my mom! I want Sarah!"

Nathaniel knelt beside me in the dim red light, reaching out to cup my cheeks softly. "I know, Ruby... I know you want Sarah. And I promise you, on my life, I will bring her here safely. But right now, you have to trust me. Please."

Dr. Aris grabbed my hand and led me toward a hidden wall panel behind a massive row of leather-bound books. The panel slid open, revealing a small, reinforced room illuminated by glowing floor strips. Before I stepped inside, I looked back.

Nathaniel was standing tall near the shattered glass doors of his office as heavy footfalls pounded down the hallway.

"Vance!" Nathaniel's voice boomed through the smoke. "It's over! The genetic data was automatically uploaded to the cloud server the second the test completed! You can't erase her!"

Through the sliding door of the safe room, I saw Julian Vance step into the office, flanked by three armed men in black tactical gear. Vance looked pale, his cold eyes darting around the room until they landed on Nathaniel.

"You always were too sentimental, Nathaniel," Vance hissed, resting his hands on his silver cane. "Twelve years ago, your company was going to destroy mine. I didn't want to kill your child. I just wanted you broken. A broken man doesn't build empires."

"You bought off the clinic staff," Nathaniel said, stepping forward to draw Vance's attention away from the hidden room. "You staged the fire."

"It was remarkably easy," Vance sneered. "A million dollars to the night supervisor. They pulled the baby out before the flames started. I intended to send her to an orphanage in another state, but the woman hired to move her—Sarah Miller—had just lost her own child at birth. The fool caught feelings, took the baby, and disappeared into the slum districts."

My heart shattered into a thousand pieces inside my chest.

Sarah took me? She knew?

"Sarah didn't know the whole truth!" Vance continued with a cruel laugh. "She thought she was saving an abandoned orphan from an illegal smuggling ring. I let her keep you in the city because it was convenient. Having the daughter of my greatest rival growing up in poverty right under his nose... it was poetic justice. And keeping her on a leash with rent notices ensured she never left my territory."

Inside the safe room, tears blurred my vision. My entire life—every birthday, every hungry night, every lesson about honesty—felt like it was tumbling down around me. Sarah wasn't just my mother; she had been tricked into being my keeper by the man who destroyed my family.

"You're a monster, Julian," Nathaniel said softly.

"Perhaps," Vance replied, raising his cane. "But I am a monster with nothing left to lose."

Vance signaled his men, but before they could move, the floor beneath us vibrated violently. The large glass windows behind Nathaniel didn't shatter—they exploded inward as tactical ropes dropped from the roof above.

Federal SWAT officers swarmed into the penthouse from the ceiling, flashbang grenades detonating with deafening booms. Red laser sights painted the room.

"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Chaos erupted. Vance's men dropped their weapons almost instantly, thrown off balance by the shockwaves. Vance tried to run back toward the elevator, but Marcus tackled him to the floor, pinning his hands behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

The room cleared of smoke within seconds. The heavy magnetic door of the safe room slid open, and Dr. Aris gently guided me back out into the light.

Nathaniel didn't look at Vance. He didn't look at the police officers. He ran straight to me, dropping to his knees and pulling me into a tight, warm embrace. He was shaking, sobbing uncontrollably against my shoulder.

"You're safe," he whispered over and over. "You're safe now, Clara."

I rested my head against his shoulder, but my mind was miles away, on a tiny, dilapidated apartment on Aldridge Street.

"What about my mom?" I asked quietly, pulling back to look into Nathaniel's eyes. "What about Sarah?"

Nathaniel wiped his eyes and looked at me with deep sincerity. "We are going to get her right now."
