Chapter 7 - Veronica Chooses HerselfVeronica resisted cooperation for two months.

Then prosecutors showed her the internal Marcus Vale messages.

One read:

Kane becoming liability. Resolve after merger.

Another:

She knows too much about Mercer site.

Veronica went silent.

Marcus had planned to dispose of her too.

Not surprising.

Still—

betrayal hurts even people who built careers committing it.

She accepted a cooperation agreement.

Her testimony exposed:

Illegal surveillance.

Corporate espionage.

The private detention network.

Bribed medical administrators.

The attempt to frame Elena as mentally unstable.

And Marcus’s plan to compromise me after the merger.

Veronica admitted she targeted me romantically.

That part hurt.

More than I wanted it to.

At sentencing later, she asked to speak.

“I told myself Adrian was collateral.”

She looked at me.

“That made it easier.”

Then Elena.

“I told myself Elena deserved what happened because she made bad choices.”

Pause.

“That made cruelty easier too.”

She did not ask forgiveness.

Good.

She received a substantial prison sentence, reduced because of cooperation.
