Chapter 11 - My New Name Was My Old One

I relocated Mercer House Events to New York eighteen months after the funeral.

The decision was not an escape from Boston. The company had grown beyond one city, and a major international fashion client offered us a multiyear contract. Still, leaving Beacon Hill felt like stepping out of a theater after the final performance.

I rebranded the business as Camille Mercer Productions.

No Wexler connection appeared in the materials.

At the opening of a new Manhattan gallery, I stood near a sculpture overlooking the city. The event was ours—lighting, sound, guest flow, security, catering, and every detail beneath the visible beauty.

A magazine lay on a side table.

The cover showed Adrian outside a courthouse.

The headline described his professional suspension, financial troubles, and family conflict. Bennett had entered court-ordered treatment. Helena had sold the Boston townhouse. Delilah was mentioned briefly as the mother of Bennett’s child.

I studied Adrian’s photograph.

He looked older.

For years, I had imagined his downfall would make me feel victorious. Instead, I felt almost nothing.

Indifference was not cruelty.

It was freedom from emotional captivity.

I placed the magazine in a recycling bin and returned to the event.

My new business chapter ner, Daniel Cho, approached carrying two glasses of champagne. He had invested in the company after reviewing our work, finances, and expansion strategy. He never described himself as the reason for my success. He asked questions, accepted answers, and respected boundaries without treating them as negotiations.

He handed me a glass.

“The client is thrilled,” he said.

“Then we have ten minutes before they request something impossible.”

He laughed.

“We can handle impossible.”

The sentence once would have reminded me of Adrian’s demands.

Now it meant only work.
