Chapter 9 - The Verdict and The Reckoning

The jury deliberated for less than two hours—a record time for a high-profile felony trial.
When the court reassembled to hear the verdict, the tension in the room was thick enough to choke on. Marcus sat at the defense table, his head bowed, his hands clutched tightly together. Eleanor looked pale, staring blankly at the floor.
"Will the defendants please stand and face the jury?" Judge Alvarez instructed.
Marcus and Eleanor rose slowly, supported by their legal counsel.
The jury foreperson, a dignified woman in her fifties, stood up and unfolded the paper containing the verdict.
"On count one, Attempted Premeditated First-Degree Murder, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"
"Guilty," the foreperson declared.
A quiet murmur ran through the gallery.
"On count two, Aggravated Kidnapping, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"
"Guilty."
"On count three, Felony Child Endangerment, how do you find the defendant, Marcus Vance?"
"Guilty."
The foreperson continued reading down the list of fourteen charges, including conspiracy, fraud, and torture. The word was the same every single time: Guilty.
Then came Eleanor's verdicts.
"On count one, Complicity to Aggravated Kidnapping... Guilty. On count two, Conspiracy to Commit Murder... Guilty."
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp and collapsed into her chair, covering her face as she wept hysterically. Marcus stood frozen, his eyes wide, staring at the jury in absolute disbelief. The reality of his complete collapse had finally crushed him.
Judge Alvarez looked over his glasses at the convicted criminals, his expression dark and uncompromising.
"Marcus Vance, Eleanor Vance," Judge Alvarez spoke, his voice echoing with absolute finality. "The atrocities you committed against Sarah Vance and her unborn child represent the absolute lowest depths of human cruelty and greed. You transformed a home into a dungeon and treated a human life as an inconvenience to be erased for financial gain."
The judge cleared his throat and delivered the sentences.
"For the crime of Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, and Torture, I sentence you, Marcus Vance, to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will spend the remainder of your natural days in a maximum-security state facility."
Marcus swayed on his feet, an officer grabbing his arm to keep him upright.
"For her full participation in this conspiracy," Judge Alvarez continued, "I sentence you, Eleanor Vance, to forty years in state prison. Given your age, this is effectively a life sentence."
The judge brought his gavel down with a sharp, thunderous CLANG. "Court is adjourned."

As the guards moved in to chain Marcus and drag him away, he turned his head desperate toward me. "Sarah! Please!" he sobbed, tears finally spilling down his face. "Sarah, forgive me!"
I stood beside Clara, holding my head high. I didn't say a word. I simply watched as the heavy doors of the judicial system closed behind him, locking him away from the world just as he had locked me away in the dark.
