Chapter 1 - The Cage in the Dark

I didn’t realize my husband had turned a dog cage into my grave until he welded the door shut, locked me inside our basement naked, nine months pregnant, and bleeding—then calmly entertained dinner guests upstairs while telling everyone I was “out of town visiting family.”
He thought no one would ever uncover the truth, but the one thing he overlooked became the weapon that destroyed everything he had built.
The laughter drifting through the ceiling sounded impossibly close. Every clink of silverware reminded me that while I lay trapped behind steel bars, Marcus was upstairs playing the role of the perfect husband.
For nearly a month, he had slowly erased me. Every other day, he shoved a bruised piece of fruit through the bars, watching me devour it like an animal while grinning. “The baby still needs enough strength to kick,” he would say. “That’s the entertaining part.”
My body was wasting away. My wrists were torn from gripping the bars whenever he came downstairs. My face was swollen, my lips cracked from thirst, and every bruise carried his signature. Sometimes he even forced me to watch videos of himself partying with other women, laughing as he reminded me I ranked below the family dog.
The cruelest part wasn’t his violence.
It was how effortlessly he lied.
“She’s spending time with relatives,” he told anyone who asked, smiling so naturally that nobody questioned him.
His mother guarded that lie just as fiercely. The only key to my cage hung around her neck. Every morning she unlocked the basement, insulted me, rationed my water until I begged, and reminded me that I deserved every second of my suffering because I had “ruined” her son’s future.
Marcus wanted me convinced the outside world had forgotten me.
He couldn’t have been more wrong.
Before he confiscated my phone weeks earlier, I had hidden an old backup device beneath a loose metal floor panel inside the cage. Wrapped in plastic, it survived while I waited for the smallest opportunity.
The signal barely reached the basement, but the recorder never failed.
Night after night, I captured everything—his threats, the crashing blows against the cage, his mother calculating how long I could survive, and every horrifying confession they believed no one would ever hear.
Then labor began.
The contractions ripped through my body while the battery blinked its final warning. Somehow, during one brief moment of signal, I managed to send my sister a location pin, three desperate words, and a single audio recording.
No reply ever came.
I assumed it had failed.
Then Marcus walked downstairs, smelling of expensive cologne and roast dinner. He stared at the blood pooling beneath me, smiled, and whispered that everyone upstairs believed every lie he told. When another contraction bent me over, he leaned closer and threatened to cut my baby out himself if I screamed again.
Before I could answer, the basement door exploded inward.

The first person through the smoke looked like another dinner guest—but the body camera strapped to his chest and the pistol in his hand revealed the truth.
Marcus’s perfect performance was over.
