Chapter 14 - The Man in the BackgroundMara was the one who found him.

Not in person.
In photographs.
She spread images from the funeral across a table.
“There.”
A man stood behind a line of mourners.
Gray hair.
Dark coat.
Unremarkable face.
Another photograph.
Same man near the cemetery gate.
Another.
Across from Mara's cottage two days later.
Richard stared.
“Who is he?”
Mara shook her head.
“I've seen him before.”
“Where?”
“At funerals.”
That made little sense.
“He attends random funerals?”
“Not attends.”
She pointed.
“He stays far away.”
Greenridge employees searched visitor records.
No name.
Then Jonah Reed remembered.
“He used to work here.”
Mara turned.
“What?”
“Long before you started.”
Jonah looked at the photo.
“Calvin Rusk.”
Records showed Calvin Rusk worked cemetery maintenance from 1991 to 2004.
During those years, several disputed property transfers in Evelyn's ledger involved Greenridge.
Ortiz ran his history.
Rusk had later worked private security.
For Northvale Development.
Richard felt anger rise.
“He's their cleanup man.”
Maybe.
But when police reached Rusk's apartment, he was gone.
Inside they found surveillance photographs of Blair.
Evelyn.
Richard.
Claire.
Judge Shaw.
Graham North.
Even Marcus.
Everyone had been watched.
One notebook contained dates going back fifteen years.
Peter Voss.
His boating trip.
His funeral.
Celeste.
Richard whispered, “He knows what happened to Peter.”
Agents searched deeper.
They found an encrypted drive.
Marcus helped unlock it.
Video files.
Audio files.
Rusk had documented people for leverage.
The oldest relevant video showed Peter Voss arguing with Graham North.
PETER: “I'm taking the ledger to the authorities.”
NORTH: “You won't make it through discovery.”
PETER: “Is that a threat?”
NORTH: “It's a prediction.”
Another file, two days later, showed Claire entering Rusk's car.
No audio.
The next file was after Peter's death.
Claire handed Rusk cash.
Richard felt physically ill.
Claire had denied killing Peter.
But she paid the man who had been watching him.
Ortiz interviewed Claire again.
She finally cracked.
“I paid him to find Peter.”
“Why?”
“He disappeared after our argument.”
“Peter died on a boat.”
“Before that. He hid for two days.”
“Why?”
“He was afraid of Graham.”
“Did you tell Rusk where Peter went?”
“Yes.”
“And Rusk told North?”
Claire covered her face.
“I didn't know he would.”
Ortiz's voice hardened.
“Peter died forty-eight hours later.”
Claire began crying.
“I thought Graham would scare him.”
Richard watched behind glass.
Claire continued.
“I didn't want Peter dead.”
“Then why did you accept his estate?”
“Because it was legally mine.”
Ortiz stared.
Claire whispered, “I hated myself for being relieved.”
That was the most believable thing she had said.
“Did you kill Evelyn?”
Claire looked up.
“No.”
“Did you poison her tea?”
“I put something in it.”
Richard stopped breathing.
Ortiz leaned forward.
“What?”
“A herbal extract.”
“What kind?”
Claire gave the name.
It matched one of the compounds under toxicology review.
Richard gripped the edge of the counter.
Ortiz asked, “Why?”
Claire cried harder.
“To make her sick.”
“Why?”
“So she'd miss a hearing.”
“What hearing?”
“The trust hearing.”
“You drugged her.”
“Yes.”
“Knowing it could affect her heart?”
“No.”
“Did you research cardiac detection?”
Claire looked away.
“Yes.”
“Then you knew.”
“I knew it might cause symptoms.”
“Did you intend to kill her?”
“No.”
“Then why did she die?”
Claire shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Ortiz placed a photograph of Calvin Rusk on the table.
Claire froze.
“Did Rusk know you drugged Evelyn?”
“No.”
“Did Graham?”
“No.”
“Shaw?”
Claire hesitated.
“Shaw knew I planned to make Evelyn ill.”
Richard closed his eyes.
The judge had known.
Maybe not murder.
But poisoning.
Interference.
A crime.
Ortiz asked, “What happened after you left Evelyn's house?”
“Nothing.”
“Did you tell anyone the dose?”
“No.”
“Did you return?”
“No.”
Blair remembered only Claire putting drops in tea.
But toxicology showed a concentration potentially greater than Claire's claimed dose.
Someone else may have added more.
Or Claire was lying again.
Then agents found another Rusk recording.
Timestamp:
The night before Evelyn died.
Evelyn's townhouse driveway.
At 11:52 p.m., a car arrived.
A man entered.
Not Claire.
Not Graham.
Not Shaw.
Richard leaned toward the screen.
The man wore a baseball cap.
After enhancement, Ortiz identified him.
Dr. Samuel Keene.
The medical examiner currently investigating Evelyn's death.

Richard stared in disbelief.
The man responsible for determining how Evelyn died had secretly visited her hours before her death.
