Chapter 11 - The LeakThe investigation narrowed.

Only a handful of people knew the chapel evidence had been recovered.

Ortiz.

Her lieutenant.

The prosecutor.

A forensic technician.

Richard.

Mara.

Two deputies.

Adrian.

And, through court disclosure, attorneys representing Claire and Shaw.

Marcus appearing at the chapel within forty-eight hours suggested communication.

Ortiz believed Claire's attorney was too careful.

Shaw's team, however, included multiple investigators and consultants.

Richard had another theory.

“What if Shaw isn't protecting Marcus?”

Ortiz looked at him.

“What if Marcus is protecting Shaw?”

“Meaning?”

“Marcus knows where money moved. He probably knows everything.”

Ortiz nodded slowly.

“So Shaw needs him controlled.”

“Or silent.”

That night, police found Marcus.

Not hiding.

Injured in a motel parking lot thirty miles away.

No graphic wounds.

But enough to send him to the hospital.

His wallet was gone.

Phone missing.

Laptop gone.

At first Marcus refused to speak.

Then he learned investigators believed someone from his own network had attacked him.

His loyalty cracked.

“I want protection.”

Ortiz answered, “Start talking.”

Marcus asked for a lawyer.

By sunrise, federal investigators were involved.

Marcus admitted helping move money through shell companies.

He admitted Northvale paid him.

He admitted Claire recruited him.

But when Evelyn's death came up, he became terrified.

“I didn't know.”

Ortiz stared.

“Didn't know what?”

“That they were going that far.”

“Who?”

Marcus looked toward the door.

“Claire.”

“And?”

He hesitated.

“Shaw.”

“What about North?”

Marcus swallowed.

“Graham never says things directly.”

“What did he say?”

Marcus took a breath.

“He said, ‘Evelyn's objection is temporary.’”

Richard watched from another room.

His fists tightened.

Ortiz asked, “Temporary how?”

“I thought legally.”

“You expect us to believe that?”

“I swear.”

Marcus's voice cracked.

“I knew they were planning to remove Richard from control. I thought they'd manufacture some financial scandal.”

“Did you help?”

“Yes.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“What did you do?”

“We made transfers using Richard's credentials.”

“To frame him?”

Marcus nodded.

“If Evelyn died, Richard would control the trust. We planned to expose the transfers and argue he was financially unfit.”

“And Claire would get guardianship.”

“Yes.”

“Then sell Bellamy House.”

“Yes.”

Ortiz leaned closer.

“Who planned Evelyn's death?”

“I don't know.”

“Marcus.”

“I don't!”

He began shaking.

“But Claire asked me something two weeks before Evelyn died.”

“What?”

“She asked how long certain heart medications remain detectable after death.”

Richard nearly broke through the observation-room door.

Adrian stopped him.

“Stay here.”

Marcus continued.

“I told her I didn't know.”

“Did she say why?”

“She said she was writing a crime novel.”

Ortiz's face showed what everyone thought.

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I didn't believe her.”

“Then what?”

“She asked Graham.”

“How do you know?”

“I heard them arguing.”

“What did Graham say?”

“He told her not to be stupid.”

Richard frowned.

That did not sound like approval.

Ortiz noticed too.

“Did North want Evelyn dead?”

Marcus shook his head.

“I don't think so.”

“Why not?”

“Dead owners bring scrutiny.”

The answer was chillingly practical.

“He preferred lawsuits. Debt. Guardianship. Pressure.”

“So Claire acted independently?”

Marcus looked uncertain.

“Maybe.”

“What about Shaw?”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Shaw hated Evelyn.”

“Why?”

“She kept digging.”

“Into what?”

Marcus looked at the table.

“Old acquisitions.”

“Your network?”

“Yes.”

“People who died?”

Marcus said nothing.

Ortiz repeated, “People who died?”

He nodded.

Richard felt the scale expand again.

Evelyn might have discovered other deaths connected to Northvale property deals.

Marcus whispered, “Peter Voss found the same thing.”

Ortiz froze.

“Claire's first husband.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to him?”

“I wasn't involved back then.”

“But you know something.”

Marcus looked exhausted.

“Peter wanted out.”

“Out of what?”

“Northvale's acquisitions.”

“He died.”

“I know.”

“Was he killed?”

Marcus stared at Ortiz.

“I don't know.”

She leaned closer.

“But?”

Marcus whispered, “After Peter died, Graham North told me something.”

“What?”

“He said, ‘Claire solves problems permanently.’”

Silence.

Richard's skin went cold.

Marcus continued.

“I thought it was a joke.”

Ortiz stood.

“People keep calling Claire's behavior jokes, misunderstandings, emotions, discipline.”

Marcus looked down.

“That doesn't make them innocent.”

“No.”

“It makes everyone who ignored them useful.”

Richard felt those words like a blow.

Useful.

That was what he had been.

His disbelief had been useful to Claire.

His money had been useful.

His signature.

His marriage.

Even his daughter.

Later, Marcus gave investigators access to an encrypted cloud account.

Thousands of documents.

Transactions.

Messages.

One folder was labeled:

B7.

Blair Seven.

Inside was a timeline ending on Blair's seventh birthday.

Item 1: Evelyn removed.

Item 2: Richard discredited.

Item 3: Claire guardianship.

Item 4: Bellamy transfer.

Item 5: Northvale acquisition.

Next to Evelyn's name was a checkmark.

Next to Richard's name:

In progress.

May you like

Richard stared at the screen.

His own destruction had already begun.
