Chapter 7 - The Space Between Heartbeats

Claire woke before dawn with pain low in her abdomen.

For one terrifying second, she could not move. Then she called Rachel, who arrived in seven minutes wearing two different shoes.

“Hospital,” Rachel said.

“It’s probably nothing.”

“You’re an architect, not an obstetrician.”

At the hospital, the doctor found that Claire was dehydrated and experiencing harmless contractions. The baby’s heartbeat remained strong. Claire cried only after the monitor confirmed it.

Ethan arrived before Rachel could stop him.

He entered the room with his lawyer and a bouquet of white roses, as though the emergency were a press event. Claire sat upright in the bed.

“Why are you here?” she asked.

“I’m the father.”

“You’re also the man who filed papers accusing me of endangering the baby.”

“I was informed you were working at the construction site late last night.”

“I was reviewing a structural issue.”

“Exactly.”

Rachel stepped between them. “Leave.”

Ethan’s lawyer raised a hand. “Mr. Mercer has a right to be informed about the child’s health.”

“He has a right to medical information,” Rachel said. “He does not have a right to intimidate the mother in a hospital room.”

Ethan looked at Claire. “You can make this easier.”

“For whom?”

“For all of us.”

“You mean for you.”

He placed the roses on the windowsill. “I’m trying to protect our family.”

“You don’t get to call control protection just because you say it softly.”

His face closed. He left without another word.

Adrian arrived an hour later. He stopped outside the room and asked Rachel whether Claire wanted him there.

When Claire saw him, exhaustion loosened something in her chest.

“Come in.”

He entered carrying a paper bag. “Soup.”

“Did you make it?”

“Absolutely not.”

She smiled weakly. “Good.”

He set the bag down and took the chair near the window. He did not ask what had happened until she told him.

“Ethan is going to use this,” she said.

“Then we document the facts.”

“You always sound calm.”

“I’m not calm.”

She looked at him.

“I was terrified when Rachel called,” he said. “But this is your fear. I won’t turn it into my performance.”

The statement moved her more than any grand declaration could have.

“I’m scared too,” she admitted. “Not of the baby. Of what happens after. Ethan has money, lawyers, people who believe him. I have a half-built house and a divorce attorney who threatens judges with spreadsheets.”

From the doorway, Rachel said, “My spreadsheets are persuasive.”

Adrian leaned forward. “You have your work. You have evidence. You have people who know the truth. And you have yourself.”

“That last one feels less reliable lately.”

“Then borrow my confidence until yours returns.”

“That sounds dangerously close to rescue.”

“No. Rescue would be me taking the decision away. This is me reminding you that you’re still capable of making it.”

The doctor discharged Claire that afternoon with instructions to rest. She hated every word of them.

Adrian drove her home. At the townhouse, he carried the soup inside but did not stay.

“You can sit down,” Claire said.

“I can.”

“But you’re leaving.”

“You need rest.”

“What if I ask you to stay?”

He looked at her for a long moment. “Then I’ll stay.”

Her heart stumbled.

“Stay,” she said.

May you like

He sat beside her on the sofa, leaving a careful inch between them. Claire closed her eyes and let her shoulder touch his.

Neither of them spoke. The baby’s heartbeat was still echoing in her mind, steady and strong.
