Chapter 13 - The Name Beneath the Name

The name beneath Northstar Holdings belonged to Charles Vale.
Adrian discovered it in a sealed probate archive after Evelyn agreed to release her husband’s private files. Charles had created Northstar as a vehicle for acquiring vulnerable properties. Andrew Bennett served as its legal agent, and Ethan inherited the structure when he took control of Mercer Development.
But the records revealed another secret.
Charles had not acted alone. A silent partner held forty percent of Northstar Holdings: Margaret Bennett.
Claire read the document three times.
“My mother was a partner,” she said.
“She joined to protect the community trust,” Adrian replied. “She was supposed to receive the property once the debt was cleared.”
“She never cleared it.”
“Because Andrew diverted the trust funds.”
“And Charles kept her trapped.”
“Yes.”
Rachel traced the partner agreement to an unclaimed estate account. Margaret’s forty percent interest had never been legally transferred. It still existed.
“What does that mean for Willow House?” Claire asked.
“Your mother’s estate may control a blocking share in Northstar,” Rachel said. “If Northstar still owns any claims against the land, those claims can be voided.”
“Who inherits her estate?”
Rachel looked at Claire. “You.”
The legal victory should have felt clean. Instead, grief moved beneath it.
Claire drove to the small cemetery where her mother was buried. Adrian offered to come, but Claire went alone. She stood before the plain stone and placed her hand against the cold letters.
“You should have told me,” she said.
The wind moved through the bare trees.
“I would have been angry. I was angry anyway.”
She told Margaret about the baby, the divorce, Willow House, and Adrian. She did not describe him as a billionaire. She described him as a man who asked before touching her.
When she returned to the car, Adrian was waiting across the street. He had not followed her. Rachel must have told him where she was.
“Did she ask you to come?” Claire said.
“She asked me to be nearby.”
“You’re getting better at boundaries.”
“I’m practicing.”
Claire leaned against the car. “My mother owned part of Northstar.”
“I know.”
“Rachel called you.”
“Yes.”
“And you waited.”
“You asked for space.”
She looked at him. “I’m beginning to understand how difficult it is to be with someone who listens.”
“It is a demanding skill.”
She smiled, then sobered. “I don’t want to use my mother’s estate to punish Ethan. I want to use it to protect Willow House.”
“Then we structure it that way.”
“With an independent trust.”
“Yes.”
“And no ownership for you.”
“None.”
She stepped closer. “I want one unreasonable thing.”
His eyes searched hers. “What?”
“Stay with me tonight.”
“Are you sure?”
“Ask me again.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
The kiss began softly beside the cemetery gate. It deepened in the quiet of the car, with grief and desire tangled together. Adrian touched her as if every movement required permission, and Claire gave it.
Later, in the townhouse, they slept in the same bed without pretending the arrangement meant nothing. Adrian kept one hand on top of the blanket, near but not claiming.

Claire woke before him and watched dawn enter the room.
For the first time, she did not feel as if she were borrowing happiness.
